BOSTON — Even when facing Jack Swagger, Alberto Del Rio proved he does not need the help of Zeb Colter to continue his winning ways as United States Champion. Del Rio cemented his U.S. Title reign at WWE TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs, overcoming The Real American in a vicious Chairs Match.

The Chairs Match rules ensured the fight — which came on the heels of Del Rio’s split with Colter, a former close ally of Swagger’s, Monday night — would not end via disqualification or count-out. Moreover, the match format turned steel chairs, which lined the ringside area, into perfectly legal instruments of destruction.

Neither Superstar wasted any time taking advantage of the relaxed rules. After a brief standoff in the ring, which Swagger got the better of, the former All-American grappler from the University of Oklahoma drove Del Rio head-first into one chair after another. An early attempt at the Swagger Bomb, however, proved unwise, as Del Rio countered by drilling a chair into Swagger’s midsection.

The League of Nations’ ruthless representative from Mexico then blasted Swagger’s back with multiple chair strikes, the reverberation of which rang through the sold-out TD Garden. As Swagger slowly rose to his feet, Del Rio telegraphed a superkick and, seconds later, wound up eating a chair that The Real American threw in face.

Swagger threatened to cinch in the Patriot Lock, but Del Rio escaped to the floor. The challenger gave chase, only for Del Rio to fight off the onslaught. The Superstar JBL refers to as “Mexico’s greatest export” launched a series of chairs at Swagger, eventually burying him beneath a pile of steel.

Back in the ring, Del Rio signaled for the Cross Armbreaker, but Swagger reversed and threw him shoulder-first into the steel ring post. He then placed Del Rio’s leg in the chair and sank in the Patriot Lock, with the presence of the chair adding further pain to the hold. With the no-disqualification rule negating rope breaks, a desperate Del Rio clung on to the ring skirt and pulled himself to freedom.

Despite being hit by a Swagger Bomb moments later, the sly U.S. Champion kicked out of a near-fall and regained the advantage as Swagger straddled precariously on the turnbuckles. With a pile of chairs beneath both Superstars, Del Rio leaped off the top rope and double-stomped Swagger onto the steel, with the winning pinfall a foregone conclusion.
