Exclusive interview: Ronda Rousey spotted backstage at SummerSlam 2014
Among the Hollywood stars and former World Champions who milled about backstage at SummerSlam, a stunning blonde in an artfully shredded “Rowdy” Roddy Piper T-shirt stood out. It was UFC Women's Bantamweight Champion and “Expendables 3” co-star Ronda Rousey (who adopted Hot Rod’s “Rowdy” nickname with the WWE Hall of Famer’s blessing), alongside her friends and fellow mixed martial artists Marina Shafir, Jessamyn Duke and Shayna Baszler. What brought the fight club known as “The Four Horsewomen” to the STAPLES Center? WWE.com approached with caution to find out. Luckily, no one was armbarred.
WWE.COM: What brings you to SummerSlam?
RONDA ROUSEY: I’m a huge fan and this is the one day of the year I happen to be able to go walk around and meet people.
WWE.COM: How long have you been a WWE fan?
ROUSEY: Ever since I was a little kid, but more so within the last year or so. It’s become our house activity to sit down and watch wrestling. It’s been such a crazy year with all the fights and the movies. It’s really rare for us all to have time to go do something together.
WWE.COM: Who are you looking forward to seeing?
ROUSEY: We’re really looking forward to seeing Roman Reigns tonight.
WWE.COM: What about Brock Lesnar? What are your thoughts on him?
ROUSEY: I think it’s extremely difficult to be able to manage two careers the way that he has. To come up from professional wrestling, then be successful in MMA, then be able to go back to wrestling — I mean, that’s a very difficult thing to not just make one transition, but to make more than one. He has all my respect as an entertainer and an athlete.
WWE.COM: Speaking of making that transition, will we ever see you in a WWE ring?
ROUSEY: You never know. I have a lot of crazy opportunities on my plate right now. I’m going to try to do as many as possible at the right time or at the best time. Tonight, I’m just here as a fan.
