The Rated-R Superstar claims the gold

As RAW went on the air, the main event was set to be Rob Van Dam vs. John Cena vs. Edge in a Pick Your Partner Triple Threat Tag Team Match. Instead, Saturday Night’s Main Event came early, and at the end of the night Edge walked out of Philadelphia as a 2-time WWE Champion.

As the night began, Edge came to the ring to badmouth the crowd in Philadelphia. John Cena then made an appearance to brawl with the Rated-R Superstar, and as they stared down the WWE Champion hit the arena as well.

RVD recalled what happened last week on RAW when Edge interfered in his match with Cena. Being a gracious champion, RVD offered Cena a rematch, but of course Edge had something to say about that. Since Rob knew that Edge would interfere anyway, he made the challenge for Saturday Night’s Main Event to come 12 days early. Edge and Cena accepted, and the Triple Threat Tag Team Match became a Triple Threat Match for the WWE Championship.

As the match neared conclusion, Cena hoisted Edge up for the FU but ended up getting dumped over the top rope. Lita then ran in with a chair, but Cena ended up hitting her with the FU. Seizing the opportunity, RVD nailed Cena with the Van Daminator and looked to finish the match.

However, Cena avoided RVD’s Five-Star Frog Splash; Cena then hoisted the champion up, dropping him with the FU. This time, it was Edge who seized the opportunity. After blasting Cena with the WWE Championship, the Rated R Superstar covered the still groggy WWE Champion for the winning pinfall. The fans on Philly were left to watch in shock as Edge celebrated his championship victory.

With Edge now the WWE Champion, where does this leave the scheduled main event of ECW on Sci Fi tonight? What was set to be RVD defending both the ECW and WWE Championships now looks to be WWE Champion vs. ECW Champion. And what about Saturday Night’s Main Event? Edge said last week on WWE.com that he would be defending the gold on July 15, and as it stands his prophecy has come true.

Tonight proves that just about anything can happen, so be sure to tune into ECW on Sci Fi tonight at 10/9 CT to see what comes.
