World Heavyweight Champion Batista def. Triple H to retain

Triple H thought he had everything under control. He was the leader of Evolution. He was the most powerful Superstar on RAW. And most importantly he was the World Heavyweight Champion. But that all started to change when Batista won the Royal Rumble. Triple H just took it for granted that his Evolution teammate would challenge the WWE Champion, JBL, from SmackDown rather than face himself at WrestleMania 21. The Cerebral Assassin even went so far as to try and play Batista against JBL to give the Animal an even bigger reason to choose him as his WrestleMania opponent.

But Batista was on to The Game. He knew what was going on. He sensed that Triple H didn't want to face him. But most importantly, he was angered that his supposed friend, Triple H, was trying to trick him rather than be up front with him. Meanwhile, The Game that everything was going according to plan. Batista gave Triple H a harsh reality check when he chose to sign the contract to face Triple H at WrestleMania 21, and followed it up by giving his former mentor a Batista Bomb through a table.

Triple H's worst fears came true at WrestleMania 21 when the pupil surpassed the teacher and Batista defeated The Game in a brutal match for the World Heavyweight Championship. So much for having everything under control.

But Triple H had the opportunity to get it all back at Backlash in a rematch. Triple H claimed that if he could hit Batista with the Pedigree, it would be lights out and he would once again wear the World Heavyweight Championship.

In fact, The Game went for the Pedigree early and often, but Batista had the move well-scouted and stayed away from the devastating maneuver in the beginning. Triple H targeted Batista's back early on, and the Animal was forced to endure a ton of punishment. Batista persevered and came back strong, sending the Cerebral Assassin into the barrier and the steel steps on the outside. When they got back in the ring, Batista was distracted by Ric Flair, who was in The Game's corner. Batista turned his attention back to Triple H and went for a Batista Bomb, but the Cerebral Assassin had gotten a hold of the World Heavyweight Championship belt and nailed the Animal before he could execute the maneuver.

Triple H was able to hit the Pedigree on Batista, but the referee had been knocked out, so there was no one to make the count. Another referee ran to the ring, but Batista was able to kick out. Triple H went back to the Pedigree on two more occasions, but Batista was able to avoid it both times. Triple H proceeded to pummel Batista in the corner, but the Animal mustered up all of his energy and was able to crush The Game with a Batista Bomb for the win.
