The Unkindest Cut

The Unkindest Cut

In the weeks leading up to their January 11, 1992 appearance on Brutus "The Barber" Beefcake's "Barber Shop" -- and WWE.com's No. 2 "Rough Side/Soft Side Moment" --  tensions had been mounting between the tag team of Shawn Michaels & Marty Jannetty, better known as The Rockers.

In an effort to clear the air, Michaels & Jannetty laid their gripes about one another on the table, blaming each other for the team's poor showings. While Jannetty seemed genuinely interested in mending fences, HBK appeared… well, less willing.

Finally, Jannetty offered to shake his partner's hand and bury the hatchet once and for all. Michaels agreed, and the duo looked ready to rock on, much to the approval of our fans and Brutus Beefcake alike. Suddenly, HBK pulled the plug on the reconciliation. He laid out his friend with Sweet Chin Music, then smashed Jennetty's head through the Barber Shop's plate-glass window.

As Beefcake tended to the bloodied face of Jannetty, Michaels rubbed more salt in his former partner's gaping wounds. As if to cement their split, HBK tore in half a WWE Magazine spread of the two.

While the betrayal demolished one of WWE's most popular pairings, it also allowed Michaels to lay the foundation for his singles career, a career that has proved one of the most storied in WWE history.
