Veteran NFL writer and Pat McAfee Show contributor Mark Kaboly breaks down his top 5 most intriguing storylines going into Survivor Series: WarGames.
THE SETUP
Survivor Series: WarGames is a few weeks away, and then there is a huge Saturday Night’s Main Event program set for the middle of December. WWE has revved up, and it is evident with several interesting storylines. Here are my most interesting:
TOP STORYLINES
1) Last Time is Now Tournament: How can you not start right here? John Cena is giving an opportunity to 16 Superstars that span Raw, SmackDown, NXT and even from the outside. That’s the way he came into WWE, and that’s the way he will go out, so it makes one doozy of a storyline to put the finishing touch on a Hall of Fame career. Cena already alluded to an opponent outside WWE, and for him to say that, you pretty much need to deliver. We already know nearly half of the field: Sheamus, Rusev, Damian Priest, Shinsuke Nakamura, The Miz, Jey Uso, LA Knight and a mystery opponent, who are all veterans. This could turn into the best storyline of the year.
2) Dom and Rey Mysterio: More Dominik Mysterio is not a bad thing. Rey Mysterio vs. Dominik Mysterio at Survivor Series: WarGames in their hometown of San Diego could be where the passing of the torch from father to son happens. Everybody loves Rey, and rightfully so, but there is a strong faction of Dirty Dom supporters, and they are growing. Fans are now letting Dom speak instead of booing him and are actually clamoring for him to be part of the Last Time is Now Tournament. Dom is a future main-eventer, and to have the Intercontinental Championship, the AAA Mega Championship and a win over his Hall of Fame father would put him in a perfect lane to be included in the Cena Tourney.
3) Logan Paul and The Vision: I didn’t have Logan Paul joining The Vision on my bingo card, but it's at least possible. I guess when Paul Heyman is involved, everything and anything is possible. It is an unusual twist to The Vision that could be trending toward adding Brock Lesnar for Survivor Series. This storyline has everything to get juicy. Is Paul the new leader? How will Bron Breakker accept that? If Lesnar joins the group, what does that do to the other three? Maybe more interesting than anything else is that Paul is joining a faction for the first time and might not have a say in a lot of decisions. Paul is one of the more talented members of the roster, but he’s been a loner as well. He can’t be a loner with Breakker and Bronson Reed alongside him.
4) MFTs: I am captivated by The MFTs and what may lie ahead for them beyond maybe The Wyatt Sicks. The introduction of Sami Zayn to the mix of people who has had beef with Solo Sikoa and his ruthless faction takes it to a new level. The diversity between Sikoa being the unquestioned leader with the suit and the microphone in hand, and the new attitude of Tama Tonga, Tonga Loa, Talla Tonga and JC Mateo makes me believe they can take care of anybody on the roster. Don’t sleep on the black and white face paint of the four adding a little mystique, which allows their aggression and new attitude to be believable.
5) Cody Rhodes/Drew McIntyre: Cody Rhodes is the champ, but this is more about Drew McIntyre than anything else. He’s totally unhinged with his “everybody is against me” mentality that has inserted new life into the rivalry. McIntyre got suspended by Nick Aldis for inserting himself into the SmackDown main event between Cody and Aleister Black, not to get after one of them but to referee Dan Engler instead. The continual nuggets of The American Nightmare doing low-key shady things add to the storyline. But to me, it’s where McIntyre takes it.
