Eight bold rivalry predictions for post-WrestleMania
With Raw after Mania kicking off the next chapter in WWE, a new batch of situations emerged from Monday Night Raw. Where will they go from here, and what will be vetted? Veteran NFL writer and Pat McAfee Show correspondent Mark Kaboly gives his take on eight potential rivalries brewing.
John Cena vs. Randy Orton
Kaboly’s Take: John Cena vs. Randy Orton is something that we have seen. We’ve seen it a lot, as in 15 times during a PLE alone over the years. This will be the first time we've seen "good guy" Orton vs. "bad guy" Cena, and that alone brings a new dynamic that we’ve never been able to experience. The Viper's sneak attack on Cena at the Raw after WrestleMania will turn into the two veterans battling at the upcoming WWE Backlash PLE in Orton’s hometown of St. Louis where the champ will be afforded the opportunity to continue to ruin wrestling like he has promised. What better place to do that is in The Viper’s hometown, in front of his family, before moving on to his next victim at WWE Money In the Bank at the Intuit Dome in early June?
A battle of "Heyman guys" past and present
Kaboly’s Take: While not official at the moment, it is reasonable to say that Paul Heyman added to his stable with Bron Breakker on Raw, 48 hours after grabbing Sethi Rollins, which could, in the short term, force Punk and Reigns to join forces and push this rivalry all the way to WrestleMania 42 like Heyman suggested on Raw. Heyman is a perfect advocate to push The Visionary to the top of the main event card like he has with Punk and Reigns in the past and give direction to Breakker, who has all the talent in the world but was in dire need of somebody pushing him in the right way. This could ultimately lead to a Breakker vs. Reigns and Rollins vs. Punk match at WrestleMania 42.
Being The Man
Kaboly’s Take: In a perfect world, Becky Lynch turning on friend Lyra Valkyria would lead to The Man joining her husband with Heyman to make a Mega Powers-like stable to wreak havoc across WWE. But Lynch doesn’t need that kind of bump. She’s perfectly capable of running her own show to fast-track her way back to the top. With a roster featuring young and upcoming talent, she could take them all out – starting with Valkyria -- before working her way back up and into the conversation with Liv Morgan, IYO SKY, Tiffany Stratton, Charlotte Flair, Rhea Ripley, and Bianca Belair as the top Superstar in the business. But before that, there’s surely a date with Bayley on the docket sooner rather than later, considering Lynch took her WrestleMania spot.
It's Rusev Day
Kaboly’s Take: I can see a short-term plan and a long-term plan for Rusev after his return to the WWE ring for the first time in five years. With Rusev’s new look, new ring entrance, and new ring music, he didn’t return to be liked. Taking out Otis and Akira Tozawa and locking in the Accolade on Otis set the tone for the two to (likely) get destroyed by Rusev in singles matches over the next few weeks. In the long term, Jey Uso sure can use a strong adversary to work with after winning the World Heavyweight Championship, and Rusev showing no mercy to The Alpha Academy – a faction that has a recent good history with Uso – should spur the titleholder to intervene. It could be a slow build out of Rusev Day before that happens, but the only other possibility may be Penta.
Jey Uso vs. Sami Zayn or Jimmy Uso
Kaboly’s Take: Speaking of Jey Uso, I’d keep my eyes on Sami Zayn and Jimmy Uso when considering his potential opponents. Zayn returning on Raw for no apparent reason whatsoever but to get caught giving Jey the stink eye once or twice, piqued my interest if The Honorary Uce could be sore at Jey over something. The same goes with Jimmy Uso. The trope of being jealous of his more successful brother is as old as the elbow and collar tie-up in wrestling, but it sure does apply here. For Jey to continue his momentum, a foil has to emerge, but whether it is Rusev, Zayn, or Jimmy is yet to be determined.
Gunther vs. Wade Barrett
Kaboly’s Take: Gunther took out Pat McAfee for coming to the aid of Michael Cole after both showed major long-time support for Jey Uso. Gunther may have gone just a tad overboard in his reaction to tapping out to Uso, which puts him in the mindset that Uso is coming to the defense of both Cole and McAfee. After an eight-week buildup and more than a year of the beef between Uso and The Ring General, let’s look in another direction. Wade Barrett hasn’t had a match in nearly a decade now as he has risen up the commentator ranks in the company to be a part of WrestleMania’s broadcast team. He is currently part of the SmackDown announce team. Thinking outside of the box, Barrett’s wrestling career was known for his brutality, which would match well against Gunther. You have to assume McAfee isn’t going to get back into the ring with the likes of Gunther. Barrett, coming from the aide of his broadcast brethren, would make a unique situation even if it is for a one-off.
Finn Bálor vs. Judgment Day
Kaboly’s Take: The Judgement Day is stronger than ever, with Dom Mysterio holding the Intercontinetal Title and Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez once again capturing the WWE Women’s Tag Team Title. Plus, JD McDonough has returned on Raw, making Finn Bálor ripe for turning on "Dirty Dom" at some point. Bálor acted like everything was fine on Raw, but that cannot be the case. After the results of the Fatal 4-Way Match at WrestleMania 41, it will lead perfectly into this long-anticipated and hinted at rivalry between Dom and Finn.
Karrion Kross vs. Logan Paul
Kaboly’s Take: Karrion Kross laid the groundwork for getting frustrated over guys like Joe Hendry and Logan Paul getting chances while he can’t even find his way onto the card in his hometown of Las Vegas. Kross is so good on the microphone that he could sell just about anything, and that includes a believable angle of Paul getting preferential treatment because he is an internet sensation, which is to WWE's liking.
