Divas Champion Charlotte def. Brie Bella

Divas Champion Charlotte def. Brie Bella

After enduring weeks of insults from Charlotte, Brie Bella was felled by Divas Champion Charlotte at WWE Fastlane 2016.

CLEVELAND — When the moment for Brie Bella’s Divas Championship opportunity against Charlotte finally arrived at WWE Fastlane 2016, the focused challenger wasn’t short on motivation or fortitude. Instead, it was the strength of the Divas division’s self-proclaimed “genetically superior athlete” that dashed the twin’s title dreams.

From the outset, it became clear that Brie was trying to harness the wildly emotional events of the past few weeks — including her sister Nikki’s neck surgery and husband Daniel Bryan’s decision to retire, and  Charlotte’s mockery of both — to drive her to victory. Indeed, Bryan’s influence was noticeable from the start, as Brie, wearing the same furry kickpads worn by her husband in triumph at WrestleMania 30, entered the Quicken Loans Arena to deafening chants of “Yes!”

Once the bell rang, the two competitors took turns feeling each other out and mocking one another, first Charlotte with a condescending “Yes!” chant of her own, then Brie with an insincere “Wooooo!” and a strut straight out of the playbook of Ric Flair, who seconded his daughter, Charlotte.

As the bout unfolded, Brie incorporated many of her sister’s signature moves, including a snapback that garnered a two-count. Though the challenger had many bursts of offense, Charlotte slowed her down before the momentum became too much to reverse. Driving her shoulder into Brie’s midsection in the corner, Charlotte even played a devious psychological game, asking sarcastically, “Where is your sister now?”

The champion continued wearing down the all-heart Brie, focusing her attack on the challenger’s neck. Yet an overambitious lunge was reversed into a drop toe hold, giving Brie an opening to kick into Brie Mode and ram her knee into Charlotte’s chest. She then paid an additional homage to her sister, connecting with a forearm shivers ala Fearless Nikki.

A big boot from Charlotte turned the tides, but wasn’t enough to beat the fortitude out of her opponent. Brie drilled Charlotte with a dropkick that knocked the holder of the butterfly-emblazoned title off the ring apron and followed up with a missile dropkick back inside the ring. In doing so, however, she seemed to hurt her left leg, as she favored the limb for the remainder of the bout.

Brie reversed a Figure Eight Leglock attempt into a “Yes!” Lock, prompting “The Nature Boy” to inch his way into the ring. While the official held off Flair, Brie turned the hold into a deep-seated half Boston crab. As she leaned back on the champion, Brie even took a moment to talk trash to Charlotte’s legendary father.

In the end, Charlotte’s power proved to be too much, even for an amped-up Brie Mode. The supremely athletic titleholder managed to push Brie off of her, sending Brie face-first into the second rope. By the time she turned around, Charlotte was able to lock into the Figure Eight Leglock, this time for the submission victory.
