How will The Rock electrify at WrestleMania 29?

The Rock will be at WrestleMania 29. We know this for certain because The People’s Champion has gone on record saying he will be present when The Show of Shows sets up shop in the N.Y./N.J. region at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. What we don’t know is in what capacity The Rock will be participating at WrestleMania 29, and that, WWE Universe, is where things get interesting.

As any Superstar, host, guest star or spectator can tell you, the roads to WrestleMania are windy and come in multitudes. Competitors who began the year in obscurity can just as easily find themselves featured in a showcase contest (see: Zack Ryder, who clawed and scraped his way up the ladder and made it to Team Teddy at WrestleMania 28 in Miami), and Superstars who already ascended the mountaintop can see their fortunes rise even higher (see: Daniel Bryan, whose “Yes!” chants truly took off in Miami even though he lost the World Heavyweight Championship to Sheamus in 18 seconds).

Therefore, while we know The Brahma Bull will grace WrestleMania for the third straight year, we don’t know what the path The Great One will walk en route to The Show of Shows. Happily, speculation is kind of our thing here at WWE.com, and we have a few ideas of how the jabroni-beatin’, lalalalalalala PIE-eatin’, trailblazin’, eyebrow-raisin’, heart-stoppin’, elbow-droppin’ People’s Champ THE ROCK, will electrify the multitudes at MetLife Stadium this coming April.

Challenge for (or defend) the WWE Championship

Rock reveals he will fight for the WWE Title at Royal Rumble then Rock Bottoms Daniel Bryan: Raw, July 23, 2012

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson announces that he will compete for the WWE Championship at Royal Rumble 2013 and then gives Daniel Bryan a Rock Bottom.

After his Once in a Lifetime showdown with John Cena this past year, we know in-ring competition is no longer off the table for The People’s Champion. And following his announcement that he’ll challenge for the WWE Title at the 2013 Royal Rumble ( not to mention this tweet), we also know there’s a possibility The Rock will be carrying the supreme prize into MetLife Stadium when WrestleMania 29 convenes. Even if he can’t dethrone CM Punk/John Cena/Ryback/The Gobbledy Gooker/whoever holds the WWE Championship by the time Royal Rumble rolls around, however, who’s to say Rock won’t lay down a challenge for the title anyway? He already established another reign at the top as his “vision” following WrestleMania 28. It’s hard to believe he won’t exploit every angle necessary to realize it.

Challenge The Streak

How will The Rock electrify at WrestleMania 29?

Fun fact: The Rock has never (AND THE ROCK MEANS “NEVER!”) challenged The Undertaker at WrestleMania. If a showdown for the WWE Title is out of the cards for The Brahma Bull, there’s no reason he can’t throw the gauntlet down at the feet of The Deadman and attempt to surmount what has become the greatest challenge in WrestleMania history. The Rock and The Phenom have history together ( they were even Tag Team Champions for a hot minute), but a collision on The Greatest Stage of Them All would — to use an old expression — certainly put a lot of butts in the seats. Besides, after interring Triple H inside Hell in a Cell at WrestleMania 28, The Demon of Death Valley will be looking for a top-caliber challenger (if he’s looking for a challenger at all), and a high-profile opponent like The People’s Champion certainly fits the mold.

Challenge for the Tag Team Championships

This one is, quite frankly, a long shot among long shots. But The Rock is no stranger to tag team action since his return, racking up a win over The Miz & R-Truth at Survivor Series 2011 with John Cena, of all people, as his tag partner. If The Great One can't find a Superstar to challenge or isn't able to maneuver his way back into a World Title picture, why not throw his hat into what has become an incredibly exciting tag team division and make another run at the twin championships instead? And besides, don't pretend that the idea of Rocky screaming “THE ROCK IS THE TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS!” over and over again doesn’t make you smile.

Rematch against John Cena

How will The Rock electrify at WrestleMania 29?

Kind of an obvious one, but a tantalizing possibility nonetheless. It’s very rare that Cena comes up short quite like he did at WrestleMania 28, not to mention the manner of his loss (a hubristic attempt at The People’s Elbow that led to Cena being planted by a Rock Bottom while he preened for the crowd) leaves the door wide open for Cena to ask The Rock to face him again. The catch here is that Rock might not want to take on the same challenge a second time, and enjoy his 1-0 record against Cena.

Then again, The Brahma Bull really doesn’t seem to like Cena, does he? Hmmm …

Rock Concert ... with Bruce Springsteen

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson performs his first ever "Rock Concert"

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson performs his first ever "Rock Concert"

The Rock is an icon with the New York contingent of the WWE Universe. Bruce Springsteen basically runs the state of New Jersey (at the very least, the Meadowlands Sports Complex). And both men are musically inclined. Imagining The Great One and The Boss joining forces in the swamps of Jersey for an epic rock concert to end all rock concerts is almost too awesome a concept for us to bear. But hey, WrestleMania is the time when anything and everything can happen (see Brodus Clay’s momma and her bridge club dancing). So really, none of this is so crazy when you think about it, right?
