From the moment SmackDown first took flight in 1999, it instantly became a major part of pop culture. And in 2007, that fact gained official status when the word "smackdown" was added to the 2007 Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, Eleventh Edition.

On a yearly basis, Merriam-Webster carefully selects and adds new words to the collegiate list. In 2007, less than 100 words were chosen. Who knew back when The Rock was predicting that he would lay the smackdown on many an opponent that the WWE phenomenon would all get so far.
 
Smack•down is officially defined as:
 
1) the act of knocking down or bringing down an opponent
2) a contest in entertainment wrestling
3) a decisive defeat
4) a confrontation between rivals or competitors
