SmackDown Five-Point Preview: Aug. 31, 2012

Will “Money” talk or will The Viper Strike?

Randy Orton vs. Alberto Del Rio - World Heavyweight Championship No. 1 Contenders Match: SmackDown, August 24, 2012

Randy Orton and Alberto Del Rio compete in a World Heavyweight Championship No. 1 Contenders Match as the World Champ Sheamus joins Michael Cole on commentary.

One week ago, Alberto Del Rio made Randy Orton tap out to become the No. 1 contender for the World Title at Night of Champions ( MATCH PREVIEW). Moments after the bell, the victorious Mexican Aristocrat got the post-match drop on World Heavyweight Champion Sheamus with the help of Ricardo Rodriguez’s shoe. Then, before the WWE Universe could catch their collective breath, Mr. Money in the Bank, Dolph Ziggler, emerged, looking to cash in his golden opportunity on the fallen titleholder. But, his plans came to a crashing halt when a recovered Orton hit The Showoff with the RKO, cutting short Ziggler’s chance at championship gold.

As a result of the turbulent events of the SmackDown main event, SmackDown General Manager Booker T tweeted Monday that The Viper will battle The Showoff tonight.

Ziggler may be larger-than-life. But, he is also extremely dangerous and constantly out to prove himself. He won the Money in the Bank contract amid incredible pressure and his recent conflict with Chris Jericho ended with the first-ever Undisputed WWE Champion being forced out of WWE. Translation: He is not one to be taken lightly.

On the other hand, WWE’s Apex Predator is just as dangerous, if not more so. And after being forced to tap out to Del Rio’s Cross Armbreaker, the nine-time World Champion will, without a doubt, be looking to re-establish himself as a top contender tonight.

Speaking of the top of the mountain, it will be interesting to see what role, if any, Sheamus and Del Rio will play in the action — considering the turbulent history of the four Superstars in recent weeks. Then again, perhaps both the World Heavyweight Champion and his No. 1 contender will opt to concentrate on each other, just 16 days before they square off for the World Title at Night of Champions.

Will Josh Mathews report to work?

SmackDown Five-Point Preview: Aug. 31, 2012

At SummerSlam, WWE commentator Josh Mathews suffered an unprovoked attack, courtesy of The Devil’s Favorite Demon, Kane. This resulted in his absence from both Raw and SmackDown last week. Then, this Monday, when Kane came to the ring, the petrified announcer took off and did not return.

The Big Red Monster has undergone anger management classes since the pay-per-view assault. ( WATCH) Still, it remains to be seen whether his victim will be able to overcome the physiological aftermath in order to effectively return to his job tonight.

How will the Queen Diva react to AJ Lee attacking her on Raw?

Vickie Guerrero has choice words for Raw GM AJ Lee: WWE.com Exclusive, August 27, 2012

Vickie Guerrero has some choice words for Raw General Manager AJ Lee and claims that she will go to the Board of Directors.

Monday night, Vickie Guerrero budged her way to the ring to publically express her discontent over AJ Lee. The Queen Diva was upset that her client, Dolph Ziggler, was forced to put his Money in the Bank contract on the line against Chris Jericho the week before. But, things went from bad to worse when Miss Lee emerged and attacked the outspoken Vickie.

Considering that Ziggler is scheduled for action tonight, it will be interesting to see how Vickie will react to the action by the head of WWE’s flagship show? Will it result in her losing her explosive edge, taking away The Showoff’s biggest advantages? Or will she have some sort of retribution on her mind?

In a WWE.com Exclusive, Vickie indicated that she was going to talk to the WWE Board of Directors. But, whether that results in any action against AJ Lee remains to be seen.

When tweets get testy, is it all about Eve?

Divas No. 1 Contender Battle Royal: Raw, Aug. 20, 2012

The WWE Divas compete in a No. 1 Contender Battle Royal for a shot at Layla's Divas Championship.

When Kaitlyn won the Divas Battle Round on the Aug. 20 edition of Raw, she succeeded in doing two things. First, she became the No. 1 contender to Layla’s Divas Championship. And second, her victory ignited a fierce Twitter conflict between herself and third-generation Diva Natalya. As a result, the two competitors will face off tonight.

Just as intriguing is the Eve factor. It was, Eve, the recently named Assistant to the SmackDown General Manager Booker T, who Kaitlyn threw from the ring to win the Divas Battle Royal. Then one week ago, Eve climbed into the ring and raised both Kaitlyn’s and Divas Champion Layla’s hand, demonstrating what appeared to be good sportsmanship.

Could the beautiful Diva simply be embracing her new role in the Booker T administration? Or does she have a hidden agenda yet to be revealed?

Who should be the No. 1 contender to the WWE Tag Team Titles?

A tag team brawl erupts during an interview with R-Truth & Kofi Kingston: SmackDown, August 24, 2012

While Matt Striker interviews the WWE Tag Team Champions Kofi Kingston & R-Truth a brawl breaks out between the other teams vying to be named the No. 1 Contenders.

One week ago on SmackDown, a brawl broke out in the back, between WWE Tag Team Champions R-Truth & Kofi Kingston and a number of strong contenders to their throne.

As officials struggled to get control, the question was raised as to who should challenge the current titleholders next? As SmackDown GM Booker T considered that question, his Assistant Eve presented him with a binder on the current status of the Tag Team Division. ( WWE.COM SPECULATES AS TO WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN IN THE REPORT)

Tonight’s match, pitting Justin Gabriel & Tyson Kidd against The Prime Time Players, will certainly go a long way toward answering that question. Whether the other participants or last week’s bedlam will have anything to say on the matter remains to be seen.
