SmackDown Five-Point Preview: Aug. 03, 2012
What will SmackDown be like with new General Manager Booker T in charge?
As reported on WWE.com earlier this week, Booker T was appointed the new SmackDown General Manager by WWE Chairman Mr. McMahon during the live SmackDown event on Tuesday. As the WWE Universe tunes in tonight to see how it all went down, one has to wonder how things on the blue brand will change with Booker at the helm.
For starters, how will it affect the World Heavyweight Championship picture, and how the show’s state of competition is determined in general? Could every Superstar who wants a chance at Sheamus’ World Title have to first master the Spin-A-Roonie? Will the specific opportunities be awarded based directly on where a particular Superstar or Diva ranks in Booker’s “Fab Five”?
Moreover, who should be worried about the five-time WCW Champion coming to power? How about Michael Cole, the outspoken thorn in Booker’s side since he joined the SmackDown announce team in February 2011? What about Cody Rhodes, the former Intercontinental Champion who crept under the legendary Superstar’s skin so much that he stepped between the ropes to face him on several occasions last winter?
It is also worth mentioning that the last time Booker T rose to a position of authority, becoming King Booker in 2006, the power definitely went to his head in a big way. Despite his obvious strong character and formidable experience with the squared circle, time will tell whether his new leadership role will prove to be one of one of fair benevolence or outright tyranny.
In any respect, when you consider Booker T’s tremendous history with SmackDown, the fact that he has watched it’s progression from ringside for the last year-and-a-half, his often outrageous personality and his battle-tested-fortitude throughout a storied career, one thing is definitely certain: things on SmackDown are about to get off the hook, sucka!
Can United States Champion Santino Marella even out Antonio Cesaro?
Last Friday on SmackDown, United States Champion Santino Marella was defeated by up-and-coming Swiss grappler, Antonio Cesaro in a shocking upset. As a result, The Milan Miracle has specifically asked for a rematch to prove that last week’s outcome was a fluke.
Considering the frustration The Italian Stallion is surely feeling — not only from his loss to Cesaro, but also from his defeat at the hands of Alberto Del Rio on Raw — one can’t help but wonder whether the dangerous Cobra will be taking on an international flavor in the heated return showdown?
What will happen when a Superstar who loves to fight shares a show with one who says he won’t fight?
Following his non-title victory over United States Champion Santino Marella on Monday’s Raw, No. 1 contender to the World Title, Alberto Del Rio, declared that he will not compete again until his bout against World Heavyweight Champion Sheamus at SummerSlam. Does this mean he will devote himself full-time to psychological warfare against The Great White? And speaking of Sheamus, it’s hard to believe that the short-tempered Superstar who loves to fight won’t attempt some sort of physical response to The Mexican Aristocrat’s self-imposed hiatus from competition — especially considering their recent volatile history.
What will happen when The Viper returns to SmackDown?
On Monday, Randy Orton made his earth-shattering return to Raw, taking down Heath Slater. Now, as WWE’s Apex Predator prepares to reinsert his venom into the blue brand, how will the reemergence of the A-list competitor shake up the title picture and SmackDown as a whole?
Will Friday night prove to be ‘Prime Time’?
On Raw, Titus O’Neil scored a controversial victory over WWE Tag Team Champion Kofi Kingston in singles competition, thanks to some strange shoe interference from A.W.
Now, on SmackDown, Kingston’s co-champion, R-Truth, will lock horns with the other member of the Prime Time Players, Darren Young. Will A.W.’s clients make it two in a row over the titleholders? Or will the cold hard Truth prove too much for “Mr. No Days Off”?
