Back in business

Back in business

With one phone call -- and a McMahon-load of dough -- offered by Hornswoggle, The APA was back in business Monday night on Raw.

When JBL and Ron Simmons went their separate ways in 2004, the "Wrestling God" and self-made millionaire decided to pursue singles glory and ultimately become SmackDown's longest reigning World Champion of all-time. But before JBL was WWE Champion, he and Simmons raised hell as The APA. Here is a glimpse at The APA and why they were one of the most unforgettable teams in WWE history:

  • JBL and Simmons were bonded by their football background. Both were All-American college football players and enjoyed pro football careers before finding success in the sport of kings.
  • Both are history-making World Champions. When JBL lost the WWE Championship to John Cena at WrestleMania 21, he was the longest-reigning WWE Champion in 10 years. Simmons became the first recognized African-American singles World Champion when he won the WCW World Championship in 1992.
  • Originally, they were known as The Acolytes in Undertaker's Ministry of Darkness. When the Ministry disbanded, they became guns for hire (The "Acolyte Protection Agency"). Following the tradition forged by the legendary team of The Crusher & Dick the Bruiser, they took delight in smoking stogies, drinking beer and kicking ass, all while getting paid handsomely.
  • Still, The APA also loved gold. They won the World Tag Team Championship three times. They were also known for their heated rivalry with The Hardys, and the two teams traded the tag team titles in 1999.

No matter what the future holds for The APA, their place in WWE Tag Team history is secure. As Ron Simmons would say: "Damn!"
