WWE World Champion AJ Styles def. John Cena & Dean Ambrose
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — AJ Styles tapped out in the Triple Threat Match that opened WWE No Mercy, but he still managed to leave Sacramento with the WWE World Championship, defeating John Cena and Dean Ambrose to retain the title in controversial fashion.
The blockbuster main event, which, for the first time in history, kicked off a WWE Network special event, saw all three competitors approach the ring with supreme determination. Cena was out to tie WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair’s record by claiming a world title for the 16th time. Ambrose was set on regaining the championship taken from him last month. Styles was determined to cement his place as “The Champ that Runs the Camp.”
All three Superstars wasted no time in trying to end the proceedings, going for their finishing maneuvers before taking each other out with clotheslines. Cena showed off his incredible strength, catching a flying Ambrose and driving him into the ring post, then German suplexing both Styles and The Lunatic Fringe simultaneously.
Ambrose and Styles neutralized each other after a hard-hitting exchange, leaving Cena an opening to hit a double Five Knuckle Shuffle. The 15-time world champion followed up with Attitude Adjustments on both Superstars, but could not pin Ambrose.
Styles found himself in a rough spot, locked in Cena’s STF and a Calf Crusher from Ambrose at the same time. The champion had no choice but to tap out, but with two submission holds applied simultaneously, the referee could not declare a winner, instead ordering the match to continue.
Now with a second chance, The Phenomenal One put aside his flashy moves and took advantage of the anything-goes rules of a Triple Threat, clobbering Cena with a steel chair to get the three-count and hang on to the WWE World Championship.
