Referee Chad Patton apologizes following Universal Championship Steel Cage Match controversy
With many in the WWE Universe affirming that Roman Reigns’ feet did indeed hit the ground before those of Brock Lesnar in the Universal Championship Steel Cage Match at the Greatest Royal Rumble event, official Chad Patton — who declared The Beast Incarnate the winner of the bout — has issued an apology via social media.
“I understand i made an incorrect decision & want to apologize,” Patton tweeted. “During the #UniversalTitle match at #WWEGRR, i saw Brock Lesnar go thru the cage first and was concerned for the health and safety of both superstars.”

The match concluded after Reigns Speared Lesnar through the Steel Cage, sending a panel of the structure toppling over. Many have noted that The Big Dog rolled to the floor first, as Lesnar laid atop the broken chain-link panel, but because The Beast technically exited the confines of the cage first, he was named the winner and therefore retained his Universal Championship.
