Shawn Michaels
Nov. 9, 1997 - March 29, 1998

Bret Hart’s final title reign came to a controversial end at Survivor Series when he took on long-time rival Shawn Michaels. Before the bell could even ring, Hart attacked Michaels and would not let up. Mr. McMahon, along with Gerald Brisco and Pat Patterson, came down to ringside to restore some order. The match finally got underway and Hart began to dominate. He slapped on the figure four leglock around the ring post as he began to work on the leg. Hart then hit a series of moves before going for the second-rope elbow drop. Michaels was able to pull referee Earl Hebner in front of him to take the brunt of the impact, though. Michaels then used Hart’s own move and locked in the Sharpshooter. Almost immediately after the submission move was locked in, Hebner called for the bell, and awarded Shawn Michaels the WWE Championship. The match will forever be remembered as one of the most-infamous matches in sports-entertainment history, as it appears as though Hart never actually submitted to the Sharpshooter. Nonetheless, the decision stood and Michaels began his third reign as WWE Champion.
