The world is searching for WWE

WWE continues to be a major Internet search engine phenomenon, picking up both the No. 2 most searched term on Yahoo! and the second most searched sports term among AOL sports searches, as well as grabbing - by far - the most votes for People's Choice in Adweek's BUZZ Awards.

WWE is once again the second most popular search term on Yahoo!'s "Most Searched" list. Millions of worldwide Yahoo! users performed billions of searches each month, and according to the "Yahoo! 2008 Year in Review," 2008 marks the third straight year WWE nearly topped the list.

So, what makes WWE such a hot topic on the Internet?

In commenting on WWE and its BUZZ's People's Choice Award, Adweek gives some of the credit for the overwhelming WWE victory to the ingenuity of Mr. McMahon's Million Dollar Mania last summer - which quickly grew into a media sensation, covered by major news networks and talk shows alike. But the success of this entertainment juggernaut certainly goes deeper than that.

"WWE is a huge empire … it's not only the drama that happens on the mat, but people like to keep track of the individual wrestlers. WWE has also released more movies this year and video games," said Yahoo! pop culture expert, Vera Chan.

WWE was searched more than President-elect Barack Obama, Miley Cyrus, RuneScape, Jessica Alba, Naruto, Lindsay Lohan, Angelina Jolie and American Idol. Britney Spears is again Yahoo!'s most searched term.

"You have to take Britney out!" Chan joked to WWE.com. "Britney is No. 1 again. You were awfully close this year. It may not take much; you have to challenge her!"

Chan pointed out that the new WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2009 video game has been a champion on Yahoo!'s "Most Searched" list lately. (Read about McCool | Read about the Bellas) Other popular WWE topics searched for include the Divas, WWE video games, WWE Alumni and WWE's new online community, WWE Universe.

"WWE is a huge phenomenon in Yahoo! search. It's often the subject in Yahoo! Buzz log," Chan said.
