WWE World Heavyweight Championship - Shawn Michaels

January 19, 1997 - February 13, 1997

After losing the WWE Championship to Sid at the 1996 Survivor Series, Shawn Michaels didn't have to wait long for a rematch and another opportunity at the WWE Championship, as the two faced off again at the Royal Rumble.

Michaels came out by himself this time. In their previous encounter, Michaels was accompanied by his mentor and former trainer Jose Lothario, but Lothario proved to be more of a distraction than anything. Sid used his large size advantage and power to get the upper hand, as he delivered a Powerbomb to Michaels on the outside. The two made it back into the ring where Sid then hit a Chokeslam, but the ref had been knocked out. A second ref came in to make the count, but after only counting to two, Sid knocked the second referee out as well. Michaels then grabbed a television camera and hit Sid with it just as Sid had done to him at Survivor Series. Michaels then hit his Sweet Chin Music for the win and his second WWE Championship.

HBK was later forced to vacate the WWE Championship on Feb. 13, 1997, due to injuries.
