Kevin Owens, Chris Jericho and the curse of the shattered glass

What is it about a glass screen that just begs a dude to smash his best friend’s head through it?

Chris Jericho suffered the fate of many a tag-team partner before him when his ostensible buddy, WWE Universal Champion Kevin Owens, smashed him dome-first through the obscenely expensive JeriTron 6500. It cemented the breakup of Jeri-KO and the bitter end to a truly beautiful friendship. And if it looked a little familiar to you? Well, you’re not alone.

You may remember that Jericho himself was the one doing the smashing to Shawn Michaels almost a decade ago, when he rammed HBK’s head into the JeriTron, putting an end to Y2J’s HBK hero worship and kicking off one of the most brutal rivalries in WWE history. And, if you want to take it farther than that, remember that The Showstopper was the original perpetrator of such an act when he threw Marty Jannetty through Brutus Beefcake’s “Barber Shop” window.

Admittedly, there’s something to the idea that using your buddy’s face to shatter glass is the ultimate act of disrespect, but few things ever happen by such a happy accident. Maybe this is nothing less than karma finally coming back around to Jericho, just as it did for HBK. Maybe the glass-shattering isn’t just a case of great minds thinking alike, but a verifiable curse passed on through generations of Superstars. In which case, of course, Kevin Owens himself is due for similar payback down the line.

Or, you know, maybe we’re overthinking things. Wouldn’t be the first time. However, just to be safe, if Owens ever sees Sami Zayn backstage lurking near a suspiciously large flat screen while muttering to himself, he might want to head the other way.
