Most Extreme Player for 1/18/08

Jeff Hardy ran away with this week's MEP. Keep in mind that MEP stands for Most Extreme Player and the "Rainbow-haired Warrior's" (credit Jim Ross of www.jrsbarbq.com) 30-foot Swanton Bomb onto WWE Champion Randy Orton exemplified extreme wrestling. (WATCH)

In fact, Hardy's death-defying dive to avenge Orton's attack on his brother, Matt, reminded me so much of calling the original ECW that I screamed, "Oh My God!" while watching Raw. That marked the first time I uncorked my trademark exclamation while not calling a wrestling match (my honeymoon excluded).

When Jeff Hardy defeated Triple H to earn his WWE Championship Match, my humble opinion was that Hardy was the underdog. However, after seeing Hardy's dives onto the Samoan Bulldozer, Umaga, and Randy Orton, I think Orton's only chance of leaving Madison Square Garden with his title are disqualification or count-out losses to Hardy (which would still leave Orton wearing the gold).

Speaking of the World's Most Famous Arena, as of the time I am penning (typing) this column, there is no ECW match on the Royal Rumble card. I certainly hope that such a match is made this week so yours truly has some work to do in Manhattan, which is tied with Philadelphia as my favorite cities to call wrestling in.

Update: The following announcement was posted on www.jrsbarbq.com (another cheap plug for the future Papa John of BBQ):

January 18, 2008:
A new, two-year contract has been signed between Jim Ross and World Wrestling Entertainment. Ross, a 34-year veteran of pro wrestling/sports-entertainment, is a member of the WWE Hall of Fame and has been with the company since debuting at WrestleMania IX in 1993. Ross and his fellow WWE Hall of Fame partner, Jerry "the King" Lawler, comprise the broadcast team on the WWE's longest running, flagship broadcast, "Monday Night Raw," which airs live on the USA Network every Monday night at 9/8 CT, and globally in over 100 countries. No other details on the terms of the contract have been released.

Congratulations, JR. See you at The Garden. Boomer Sooner!
