WWE Championship Match
Shawn Michaels def. Bret "Hit Man" Hart to become new WWE Champion
This will go down as one of the most infamous moments in WWE history. HBK and the Hit Man had one of the most storied rivalries ever, and this turned out to be their final encounter. These two not only met in the Survivor Series main event five years earlier, but they had an epic clash at WrestleMania XII in a 60-minute WWE Iron Man Match that saw HBK win in overtime. Bret was the Champion heading into that match, and he was Champion heading into this one as well.
This one took place in Montreal, and Shawn got under the skin of the crowd right off the bat when he mockingly wiped his rear with the Canadian flag. The Hit Man didn't waste any time in getting things started as he attacked HBK before the bell even rang.
Shawn came back and rammed Bret into the steel steps and choked him out with the Canadian flag. Then they brawled into the crowd and to the entranceway. Michaels suffered a suplex on the concrete and Bret hit him with a fire extinguisher. The action finally got back to the ring and the bell was finally rung.
The match went back and forth until Bret went on the offensive towards the end of the match. After hitting a Russian legsweep and a backbreaker, he went up to the second rope for a flying elbow, but HBK pulled the ref in front of him. Shawn was then able to lock Bret into the Sharpshooter. Despite Hart never officially giving up, the referee called for the bell, thus concluding the infamous Montreal Incident. It later became widely known that Mr. McMahon called for the bell because Bret was heading to WCW and he feared the Hit Man would take the WWE Championship belt with him if he still had it.
