We live in an age of dream matches — John Cena vs. The Rock, Brock Lesnar vs. Goldberg and Batman vs. Superman. But what if we could hop in the DeLorean with Einstein and mix and match icons of the recent past to take on rising legends of today? The SmackDown brand has always been a fixture for surging Superstars and surefire Hall of Famers. Because of this, WWE.com pit classic SmackDown stars from roughly the first 10 years of the Blue Brand against those of SmackDown LIVE today and let the WWE Universe decide who would come out on top!
SmackDown’s The Rock vs. SmackDown LIVE’s AJ Styles
Team Blue always finds itself with a face of the brand. In 2017, that face for many in the WWE Universe is AJ Styles, the self-proclaimed “Face That Runs The Place.” At the onset of the Blue Brand it was the creator of the program, The Rock, who called SmackDown his show. Who would prevail in a battle to see who’s really the definitive face of SmackDown?
SmackDown’s Rey Mysterio vs. SmackDown LIVE’s Baron Corbin
Baron Corbin loves to be the bully, while “The Ultimate Underdog” Rey Mysterio loved to chop the big guys down to size — that sounds like the makings for a classic battle between two generations of SmackDown Superstars. Would Corbin’s size give him a distinct advantage over The Master of the 619? Or would Mysterio’s heart help him prevail over The Lone Wolf’s muscle?
SmackDown’s Edge vs. SmackDown LIVE’s Bray Wyatt
Team Blue has always been a home for master manipulators, mind game practitioners and ultimate opportunists. No two Superstars embody those superlatives more than SmackDown’s Edge and SmackDown LIVE’s Bray Wyatt. Which Superstar would be able to gain the mental advantage before a struggle in the squared circle even got underway?
SmackDown’s Eddie Guerrero vs. SmackDown LIVE’s Dean Ambrose
To become the heart and soul of the SmackDown brand you need a certain level of heart, enthusiasm and drive. In 2004, Eddie Guerrero was unquestionably the heart of Team Blue when he became WWE Champion by defeating Brock Lesnar in an incredible upset. Dean Ambrose also acquired that label when he entered SmackDown LIVE’s New Era as WWE Champion himself. It’s anybody’s guess as to who would come out on top in this fantasy matchup. The only guarantee is Guerrero’s belief in lying, cheating and stealing pressed up against The Lunatic Fringe’s unpredictable nature would produce a heart-racing result.
SmackDown’s Team Angle vs. SmackDown LIVE’s American Alpha
“Intelligence, Intensity & Integrity” vs. “Ready, Willing & Gable” just kind of sings, doesn’t it? SmackDown’s Team Angle, led by Kurt Angle and featuring Shelton Benjamin & Charlie Haas were renowned by the WWE Universe for their incredible in-ring skills. SmackDown LIVE’s American Alpha are known for the same exact thing today. A clash between the two tandems would be WrestleMania-worthy … it’s damn true!
SmackDown’s Michelle McCool vs. SmackDown LIVE’s Alexa Bliss
SmackDown’s Michelle McCool is widely recognized as perhaps the most physical Women’s Superstar in WWE history, as well as arguably the most influential female Superstar in SmackDown history. But SmackDown LIVE’s Alexa Bliss might just be the feistiest and surging of the modern day. McCool would sport a rather large size advantage over WWE’s version of the Wicked Witch, but Bliss would no doubt have multiple tricks up her sleeve. This one would be fun.
SmackDown’s John Cena vs. SmackDown LIVE’s John Cena
Who would be John Cena’s toughest test ever? Well … John Cena. Wait, what? (Record scratch) Much like another famous athlete that represents the greater Massachusetts area, Tom Brady, it appears that The Cenation Leader simply gets better with age. Back during the classic SmackDown era, though, Cena had a more aggressive streak to him, subscribing to the ethics of Thuganomics. Which incarnation of Cena would find himself to be most super?
