SmackDown Five-Point Preview: Aug. 23, 2013

Can Del Rio destroy Charisma itself?

Apparently battling it out in a tooth-and-nail,  World Heavyweight Title slugfest at SummerSlam just wasn’t enough. That’s because titleholder Alberto Del Rio and Christian are set to engage in another epic struggle tonight!

After Del Rio clearly injured Captain Charisma’s shoulder in their pay-per-view match – which played a key part in Christian’s defeat – it stands to reason that this return confrontation may be a bit premature.

On the other hand, Del Rio has his problems, too. His former personal ring announcer, Ricardo Rodriguez, made it apparent on Raw that he has now alignined himself with Rob Van Dam. And it will be interesting to see if this new alliance will also have any impact on the outcome of the clash.

Will SmackDown see a serpentine slaughter? YES!? or NO!?

Randy Orton's "Championship Coronation": Raw, August 19, 2013

Randy Orton enters the Raw arena as the new WWE Champion.

Moments after Daniel Bryan captured the WWE Championship in a heroic showdown against John Cena at SummerSlam, a stunning attack from special guest referee Triple H cleared the way for Randy Orton to cash in his Money in the Bank contract and seize the title amidst a hurricane of controversy.

That was nothing compared to the tumultuous Raw just twenty-four hours later, when WWE’s Apex Predator presented a jaw-dropping, unified front with the McMahons and The Game,  RKO’ing Bryan after watching The Shield mercilessly take apart the bearded Superstar.

Tonight, Orton is scheduled to open SmackDown. Considering the current state of turmoil surrounding the volatile Viper, the WWE Universe had better brace itself for the complete breakdown of order that is sure to follow.

Is the Axel strong enough for this Rhodes?

Cody Rhodes vs. Damien Sandow: Raw, August 19, 2013

Former best friends collide when Cody Rhodes goes one-on-one with "Mr. Money in the Bank" Damien Sandow.

You know, it wasn’t long ago that Cody Rhodes reigned supreme as the Intercontinental Champion, a title he was so proud to carry that he reintroduced a  classic version of the gold – once worn by the likes of “Macho Man” Randy Savage, Bret “Hit Man” Hart, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin and, yes, Mr. Perfect.

Now that “the son of the son of a plumber” has defeated Damien Sandow in back-to-back showdowns at SummerSlam and Raw, Rhodes looks to get back in the title picture with a fierce match against reigning champion Curtis Axel tonight.

If Raw is any indication, Axel is still neck-deep in the controversy between CM Punk and Paul Heyman. Considering this preoccupation and his SmackDown opponent’s growing momentum, the current titleholder could very well walk away with a loss tonight, bringing Rhodes front and center in the Intercontinental hunt.

Will Big E steal the show?

Einstein once defined insanity as doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting a different result. Well, on Sunday, Divas Champion  AJ Lee & Big E Langston tried to flatten Dolph Ziggler & Kaitlyn and fell short. Will there be a different result tonight when AJ looks to sic Big E on her ex-boyfriend yet again? Well, Einstein says no. But, since the celebrated scientist never bench pressed what the Showoff’s opponent has, clearly anything is possible.

How can 3MB outplay Mark Henry & Big Show?

RVD, Mark Henry & Big Show vs. The Shield - Six Man Tag Team Match: SmackDown, Aug. 16, 2013

The trio of Rob Van Dam, Mark Henry, & Big Show face The Shield in a Six Man Tag Team Match.

On Monday, Big Show made it clear that he will team with Mark Henry and that they are going to take the WWE Tag Team Titles from Seth Rollins & Roman Reigns.

Not too long ago, the intense rivalry between The World’s Strongest Man and The World’s Largest Athlete was so gigantic that it literally broke the ring. So now that these two titans of pure immensity have decided to form a colossal collective, hell bent on tag team title glory, does it seem the least bit wise to step onto those tracks?

Tonight, the humungous pair will battle 3MB in a 2-on-3 Handicap Match. Folks, it is very possible that Health Slater, Drew McIntyre & Jinder Mahal have played their last air guitar.
