SmackDown Five-Point Preview: Sept. 07, 2012

Will Cody Rhodes & The Miz prove themselves to be two-faced conquerors?
Cody Rhodes has become “obsessed” with unmasking Sin Cara and Rey Mysterio in recent weeks, a preoccupation that has cost him several victories against the two high-flying Superstars. One week ago on SmackDown, the masked tandem further stoked Rhodes’ fury when they placed a Sin Cara mask on the head of the defeated grandson of a plumber. ( WATCH | WATCH EXCLUSIVE: RHODES’ REACTION)
Though Tensai wasn’t able to help him achieve vengeance on Monday’s Raw ( WATCH), perhaps Rhodes will have more luck after recruiting Intercontinental Champion The Miz to his cause in tonight’s scheduled tag team showdown. Can The Awesome One’s involvement finally allow Rhodes to give his opponents a facelift? Or will his obsession continue to block his path to success?
How does David Otunga plan to lay down the law on Sheamus?
Though World Heavyweight Champion Sheamus attempted to Brogue Kick his No. 1 contender, Alberto Del Rio, last Monday on Raw, it was Ricardo Rodriguez that ended up suffering the big-booted blast. As a result of the assault, Rodriguez employed the legal counsel of David Otunga, who Touted earlier this week that he will explain the course of action his injured “client” is taking tonight on SmackDown.
Knowing the persuasive ability of the Harvard graduate, his impending legal maneuver is likely to be something big. Will he attempt to have Sheamus stripped of the World Heavyweight Title, just nine days before Night of Champions? Does he possibly look to have the Irish champion suspended altogether? Or could another record-setting $500K-plus fine be headed The Great White’s way?
Are The Showoff and The Viper destined to clash again?
After losing to Chris Jericho at SummerSlam, Dolph Ziggler miraculously redeemed himself the following night by overcoming the first-ever Undisputed WWE Champion, thereby also ending his legendary adversary’s time in WWE. Last Monday on Raw, “Mr. Money in the Bank” again proved his worth with a huge victory over Randy Orton ( PHOTOS), just three days after he fell to The Viper on SmackDown. ( PHOTOS) However, did this triumph set Ziggler apart, or has it put an even bigger target on his back?
The two Superstars first came to blows two weeks ago, when WWE’s Apex Predator cost Ziggler a chance to catch in his Money in the Bank contract on the Aug. 24 SmackDown. With each of them having claimed a victory over the other, it’s a safe bet that the bad blood between them is not settled – especially when one considers the volatile nature of The Viper. Since Orton is scheduled for action tonight and Ziggler is never far from SmackDown, it’s very possible that their conflict could once again spin out of control.
Who will be the No. 1 contenders to the WWE Tag Team Titles?
Competition in WWE’s turbulent tag team division is more intense than it has been in years. On the Aug. 24 SmackDown, this manifested itself in the form a huge, multi-tag team brawl during an interview with WWE Tag Team Champions R-Truth and Kofi Kingston. With SmackDown General Manager Booker T’s administration looking on, The Usos, Primo & Erico and The Prime Time Players will square off tonight to determine the No. 1 contenders to the current titleholders. Who will emerge victorious?
Is the WWE Universe ready for a reinvigorated Barrett Barrage?
For weeks, the WWE Universe has waited with eager anticipation for the imminent return of Wade Barrett, following a partially dislocated elbow that kept him out of action for nearly seven months. In recent weeks, it has become apparent that that English Superstar used that downtime to get back to basics and “reignite the flame” – presumably through participation in the sort of bare-knuckle boxing he took part in early in his past.
Tonight on SmackDown, the wait is over. Barrett is scheduled to return to action against Yoshi Tatsu. In procession of the renewedvigor that has been described, he is sure to waste little time bringing his own brand of ruthless aggression back into the SmackDown mix.
