Triple Threat = three times the action
For over a month, three of RAW’s top Superstars have been embroiled in a bitter battle over the Intercontinental Championship. Tonight, champion Johnny Nitro will face contenders Shelton Benjamin and Carlito in a Triple Threat Match to finally settle the dispute. But with each man having recently scored a significant win over another, it is anybody’s guess who will walk away with the gold tonight. The only thing that is for sure is that all three athletes will be putting on quite a show.
The three men first met in a Triple Threat Match at Vengeance, where Nitro stole Carlito’s pin to win the Intercontinental Championship from Benjamin. Carlito had hit the champ with a devastating Back Cracker, but the opportunistic Nitro pulled him out of the ring and took the pin, and the championship, for himself.
In the following weeks, Carlito defeated Nitro twice, but the gold did not change hands. His first victory came when Melina interfered in a championship match, causing Nitro to lose the match by disqualification but not lose his championship. The second win came when Carlito pinned Nitro in a Mixed Tag Team Match at Saturday Night’s Main Event where the championship was not on the line.
Carlito went on to beat Benjamin to become the No. 1 Contender on the July 17 edition of RAW, only to lose the honor to him the following week in a rematch. Some blame Carlito’s recent loss on the fact that Benjamin used an illegal low blow, but others say Carlito has been distracted with thoughts of Trish Stratus. The two have been spotted several times in deep conversation in the locker-room area ever since teaming together against Nitro and Melina at Saturday Night’s Main Event.
Will Carlito be able to stay focused on the match to reclaim the Intercontinental Championship? Can Benjamin build on his momentum from last week to get another win? Or will Nitro do anything necessary to hold onto his gold?
Tune in to RAW tonight live at 9/8 CT on the USA Network to find out.
