John Cena vs. Kurt Angle vs. Shawn Michaels in a Triple Threat Match for the WWE Championship

For the second year in a row, Shawn Michaels found himself in the Championship match at Taboo Tuesday, thanks to his legions of fans showed their support. HBK garnered 46 percent of the vote, beating out Kane (38 percent) and Big Show (16 percent).

John Cena is no stranger to having the odds stacked against him as RAW General Manager Eric Bischoff has been out to get him ever since the WWE Champion was drafted to RAW in June. Not only had Cena fallen victim to Angle three times in a row, but now he also had to worry about the Showstopper, the Icon, the main event, Shawn Michaels. In fact, Cena didn't even need to be pinned to lose his WWE Championship at Taboo Tuesday.

Before the match started, Angle proposed to HBK that they team up to take out Cena and then see who the better man is. HBK said he'd think about it, but when the bell rang, it looked like it would be every man for himself as Angle knocked Michaels out of the ring right away. After Cena scored a series of near falls, however, Angle and the Showstopper went back to Angle's original plan and teamed up.

They threw Cena shoulder-first into the steel ring post and followed the fallen Champ to the outside. Angle continued to work over Cena, while Michaels cleared off the Spanish announce table. Angle dragged a seemingly lifeless Cena to the table and then he and Michaels hoisted him up and sent him crashing into the table with a thunderous front suplex. That was the end of the alliance, though, as Angle went back after Michaels.

With Angle and Michaels returning to the ring, it looked as if the fans would finally see who was truly the better man. After hitting a belly-to-belly suplex, Angle went up the ropes for a super belly-to-belly suplex, but HBK threw him off. Angle recovered and hit a super Angle Slam but only scored a two-count. Then, from out of nowhere, Cena reemerged and cleaned house. Perhaps playing possum, the Champ seemed rejuvenated.

Cena eventually went for the Attitude Adjustment on Angle, but Angle rolled through and slapped on the Ankle Lock. Cena tried to kick out of it twice, but Angle held on like a rabid pitbull. Angle then grapevined the hold, but right before it appeared Cena would tap out, HBK hit Angle with the flying elbow drop. HBK then tuned up the band and laid out Angle with Sweet Chin Music, but Cena swooped in and hit the Showstopper with the Attitude Adjustment and picked up the 1-2-3. The Champ once again defied the odds and walked out of San Diego with the WWE Championship around his waist.
