Rock vs. Rattlesnake at WrestleMania X-7
Two titans in WWE history battled for the WWE Championship on the Rattlesnake's home turf. But it took intervention from one of "Stone Cold" Steve Austin's sworn enemies to give the toughest S.O.B. in WWE the gold.
At WrestleMania X-7, 67,925 rowdy Texas fans saw the No. 6 ‘Mania Match That Made Us Sweat -- a rematch of WrestleMania XV's title tilt between The Rock and Austin. This time, all rules were out the window as the two, at the last minute, agreed at to a No Disqualification Match for the cherished WWE Title.
The match spilled over the barrier into the Houston Astrodome crowd as The Great One and Stone Cold battled tooth and nail, each bloodying the other with a ring bell.
After trading Sharpshooter attempts, Austin reached into his bag of tricks and locked in the Million Dollar Dream sleeper hold on The Rock -- shades of the days he debuted in WWE as The Ringmaster. The Rock broke free and blasted his rival with a Stone Cold Stunner.
As the two in the ring traded finishers, WWE Chairman Mr. McMahon came down to the ring to observe the action first-hand. But that observation quickly become participation as the Chairman broke up Rock's pinfall attempt, then slipped the Rattlesnake a steel chair.
Austin clocked The Rock with repeated chair blows, and covered the People's Champion to win his fifth WWE Championship. The Houston crowd was stunned. Millions in the worldwide pay-per-view audience heard Jim Ross, a close friend of Austin, scream, "My God, "Stone Cold" has sold his soul for the WWE Title and is shaking hands with Satan himself!"
The Chairman and Austin -- two life-long enemies that have seen the bloodiest of personal vendettas -- sealed their unlikely union by sharing a couple of cool Steveweisers in the center of the ring on sports entertainment's grandest stage. However, the image of their unholy alliance at WrestleMania X-7 still makes us sweat to this day.
