Nov. 8, 1992 Saturday Night's Main Event - Shawn Michaels vs. British Bulldog
Following the breakup of The Rockers in January 1992, Shawn Michaels forged out on his own. On November 8, 1992, Michaels took on the British Bulldog (Davey Boy Smith) for the Intercontinental Championship on Saturday Night’s Main Event. Although Bulldog was the defending champion and overwhelming favorite, it was Michaels who walked out with the gold that night
As the match began, the two were at a stalemate, as Shawn tried to overpower Bulldog. HBK eventually used his speed to avoid Bulldog and take control with a thumb to the eye. Shawn then worked over Bulldog’s arm in an attempt to keep Bulldog from utilizing his powerful full nelson. Bulldog escaped with a suplex and was able to knock Michaels to the floor.
Back in the ring, Bulldog took control, and continued to overpower Michaels until HBK was able to toss him to the floor. As the referee counted Bulldog out of the ring, Michaels untied one of the top turnbuckle pads as the show went to commercial break.
When the broadcast returned, HBK took control and worked Bulldog’s back, utilizing an abdominal stretch. Bulldog powered his way out, and took control by sending Michaels into the turnbuckles. Bulldog hit a pair of suplexes, but Michaels was able to whip him into the exposed turnbuckle, further injuring Bulldog’s back.
Bulldog was able to regain control and set Shawn up for a superplex. However, on the way down, Shawn shifted his weight, landing on top of the Bulldog. The force of the blow knocked the wind out of Bulldog, allowing Shawn to get the three count for the upset victory. The win gave Michaels the Intercontinental Championship, and was only the second time gold had changed hands on Saturday Night’s Main Event.
