"Mean" Gene Okerlund recalls his favorite WrestleMania Moment

“Well, my favorite WrestleMania moment didn’t actually happen at the show itself. There are so many great moments I’ve been a part of over 13 WrestleManias; it’s hard to choose just one, so I’ll give you this story.

At WrestleMania 2, I was in Chicago for the Rosemont Horizon portion of the show. We had the NFL/WWE Battle Royal, and Dick Butkus was one of the special referees. Dick got to the building about noon or so, and I brought him in and showed him his dressing room and so forth. He just kind of sat around not knowing what to do, he didn’t really know anybody. So I said to him “Dick, I’m going to run down and get a beer and a hot dog, can I interest you in one?” He said yes, so I went and got them and came back, and he enjoyed that. About half an hour later, he came to me and told me he was going to go get another hot dog, and asked me if I wanted another one. Well, this went on for the rest of the afternoon, and by the time the show started, we were tuned up and excited and full of hot dogs.

It turned out to be a great icebreaker, and I still stay in contact with him periodically to this day. I made a life-long friend over a cold beer and a good hot dog that day, and that’s a WrestleMania moment in itself right there.”
