10 strange (but true) WrestleMania facts

The showcase of the challengers

Reigning titleholders prevail often enough at WrestleMania to prove their championship pedigrees are legit. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said when the champion is challenged in the main event.

Through WrestleMania 29, 54 percent of defending champions have successfully retained their title in the 108 title matches to take place on The Grandest Stage of Them All. However, that success rate takes a nosedive in the context of every WWE Championship and World Heavyweight Championship on the line in WrestleMania’s final bout of the night. In those instances, only 29 percent of World Champions have triumphed in the 24 championship clashes that have closed The Show of Shows.

That said, WWE Champions prevailed in three of the five most recent WrestleMania finales where a title was at stake. So, there’s hope that the reigning WWE World Heavyweight Champion can continue to buck the trend favoring the challengers if asked to defend WWE gold in the last match at The Showcase of the Immortals.
