High-flying hopes at Unforgiven
Brian Kendrick & Paul London have been flying high lately. But do they have enough altitude to soar over World Tag Team Champions Lance Cade & Trevor Murdoch at Unforgiven this Sunday?
After briefly taking the World Tag Team Championship during a tour in South Africa and getting the best of Lance Cade & Trevor Murdoch last Monday on Raw, do Paul London & Brian Kendrick have the champs’ number? Are they considered favorites in their title match against Cade & Murdoch this Sunday at Unforgiven?
If so, the high-flying duo finds themselves in unfamiliar airspace. During their impressive 11-month reign as WWE Tag Team Champions on SmackDown, London & Kendrick were almost always pegged as underdogs. They got used to critics – and their opponents – underestimating them. But London & Kendrick had a knack for thrilling our fans by repeatedly pulling out victories whenever they appeared on the verge of defeat during their reign.
The determined duo found new challenges when they were drafted from SmackDown to Raw in June, and observers anticipated an inevitable showdown between them and Cade & Murdoch. After defeating the Self-Proclaimed World’s Greatest Tag Team of Charlie Haas & Shelton Benjamin two weeks ago to become the No. 1 contenders for the gold, London & Kendrick immediately targeted the champions.
During the South African tour, the pair won the World Tag Team Championship from Cade & Murdoch only to lose the gold back to the Southern-fried duo three days later in a heated battle. While Cade & Murdoch fancy themselves genuine sportsmen — even entering the ring to shake hands with London & Kendrick after their victory over Haas & Benjamin — the two would sooner spit tobacco on the rule book than surrender their titles.
And while London & Kendrick are renowned for competing above the board, they’ve also shown they’re not afraid to bend the rules a bit when matching up against a wily and conniving duo, such as Cade & Murdoch. They showed this last Monday when London battled Cade in a one-on-one matchup. While the referee’s back was turned, Kendrick flattened Cade with his patented Sliced Bread No. 2, helping London notch the victory.
However, London & Kendrick may also have to beware of overconfidence from their victories over the World Tag Team Champions. Earlier this year, Deuce & Domino repeatedly defeated them in non-title matches on SmackDown when they were WWE Tag Team Champions. But when the two teams squared off for the first time with the championships on the line at No Way Out, Deuce & Domino were overconfident and London & Kendrick left with their gold intact.
So, who will return to Raw next Monday clutching the World Tag Team Titles? Will the rough-and-tumble twosome of Cade & Murdoch be able to retain the championship? Or will London & Kendrick swoop down to recapture the top spot in the tag team division? Find out at Unforgiven, live and only on pay-per-view this Sunday, Sept. 16 at 8/7 CT.
