The Scope - Norfolk, VA
Opened in 1971, the Scope in downtown Norfolk, Virginia is the biggest arena facility in the Chesapeake Bay area. Currently the home of the Norfolk Admirals of the American Hockey League, the Scope also formerly housed the ABA’s Virginia Squires in the 1970s, as well as Old Dominion University sports until 2002.
WCW was a frequent visitor to the Scope, with the 1988 and 1991 Starrcade pay-per-view events held there. It was also the home of the World War III pay-per-view in 1995 and 1996, as well as a Monday Nitro in 1998.
WWE made its first visit to the Scope in 2003, as the April 17 edition of SmackDown saw John Cena defeat Chris Benoit to become No. 1 Contender to the WWE Championship. Following the 2004 Great American Bash, SmackDown once again made its way to Norfolk in February 2006.
