Big E presides over the wedding of two WWE fans

When Big E offered himself up as a wedding officiant, the WWE Universe wasn’t quite sure what to expect. As he revealed in an interview with WWE.com, the New Day member wasn’t certain either.

But this past weekend in Los Angeles, the newly-ordained powerhouse helped one lucky couple tie the knot. WWE.com caught up with Big E to see how the experience lived up to his expectations.

WWE.COM: When we last spoke, you were still sorting through all the emails to pick out couples. How many weddings did you end up doing?

BIG E: We just did one. I think the biggest issue was there was such a small window to be able to perform these weddings. I gave people pretty much three days, in one specific town, with not much heads up. So, we ended up settling on one. They seemed like a great fit, the time worked out and they seemed excited about it. So, Joseph and Brisa were the couple we went with.

WWE.COM: What made them stand out?

BIG E:  It’s hard to convey tone or emotional connection over email, but they seemed appreciative and excited about it. They’re definitely big WWE fans. I found out that they’d been to the last five WrestleManias. Their first WrestleMania was my first as a member of the main roster. It just felt right to me.

WWE.COM: You had also mentioned that their might have been some nerves on your part heading into it. Did that change at all as the wedding got closer?

BIG E: I wouldn’t say nerves as much as uncertainty, because it’s something I’ve never done before. Its new to me and I didn’t know what to expect. That and wanting to do a good job and wanting them to be pleased with the outcome. You only, hopefully, have one wedding. But, as soon as I arrived and met them, I was excited. I was really impressed with them as people and the arrangement and how they thought things through. It ended up being perfect.

WWE.COM: What was the ceremony like?

BIG E: I married them in Grand Park, just outside a courthouse there. I thought the venue was going to be inside, but it was on the steps outside. Around the time we started, the sun started coming down, which ended up being really beautiful. They had about a dozen friends and family present. They made a banner that said “WeddingMania – Big E Rocks!” with a unicorn and the pink and blue we wore for so long. It was pretty cool.

Joseph wore this sweet throwback Bret Hart windbreaker. Brisa had a white wedding dress with a cape and a Raw Women’s Championship replica. I love that they were dressed for a wedding, but also infused their love for WWE. It was a good marriage of WWE and celebrating the love of two people.

WWE.COM: Was there anything you did to put your own spin on the ceremony?

BIG E: A little bit. I did have some stuff written that was a bit more of my shtick. But Joseph emailed a template and I thought it was beautiful. The big thing for me was I didn’t want to make it about me. I wanted to celebrate their union and be respectful of that. They had a poem that they both really enjoyed that I read, which was sweet. I threw a little of my stuff in at the beginning – “AWWW, WEDDING PARTY!” – but for the most part, I stuck to honoring the seriousness of two people getting married.

WWE.COM: Now that you’ve got the first one out of the way, is this something you’d do again?

BIG E: It’s definitely something I’m open to. I was talking to my buddy Emilio, who helped me put this together, and we were talking about doing different stuff. I’m not accustomed to having time off. It’s been over two weeks and counting. It’s different for me.

There are so many things I want to try and do that excite me, different projects, but we never have time with our schedules. We’re home two days a week, sometimes less than that. Right now, we’re brainstorming other projects. Obviously, now I’m an official officiant, so I can do that moving forward. So, if it works out with my schedule and another couples’, it’s something I’m willing to do. But I kind of want to do different unexpected stuff, try new things and challenges, meet people from different walks of life. This opens the door for that.

WWE.COM: So the WWE Universe should be ready for Big E to show up anywhere?

BIG E: Yeah, why not?
