The Sovereign Bank Arena, located in the heart of Trenton, New Jersey, opened its doors on October 1999 in impressive fashion—with a WWE live event. Since its inauguration in ‘99, the SBA has played host to over 1,200 events, and served well over four million guests. Now, WWE is heading back to the Jersey state capitol for Friday Night SmackDown.

In WWE’s latest visit for RAW in February 2006, former Rocker Marty Jannetty made an unforeseen return to the squared circle when he came to the rescue of his old tag team partner, Shawn Michaels, helping HBK fend off a lopsided four-on-one attack from the Spirit Squad. Triple H, Big Show, and RVD capped off the evening’s Triple Threat main event. Triple H emerged as the winner of the Road to WrestleMania 22 Tournament finals by dropping RVD with a Pedigree for the pin.

On SmackDown in May 2005, the capacity crowd in the 10,000 seat arena watched a brutal Trenton Street Fight between Chavo Guerreo and Rey Mysterio. After an exhausting match, Mysterio managed to pick up the victory, but his celebration was cut short when he was ambushed and suplexed into the steel steps by Chavo’s uncle, Eddie Guerrero.

Also that night, after announcing his Judgment Day match with JBL would be an “I Quit” match, John Cena premiered his new music video, “Bad, Bad Man.” Other popular musical acts that have graced the SBA’s stage includes: Cher, Bruce Springsteen, Shania Twain, Luciano Pavarotti, Creed, 98 Degrees, and Matchbox 20. The Sovereign Bank Arena is also the home of the 2005 Kelly Cup winning Trenton Titans hockey team.

What will unfold tonight when King Booker squares off against the United States Champion Bobby Lashley? Will Lashley finally get some payback for being forced to kiss the King’s feet two weeks ago? Also on the card: Rey Mysterio, who was DDT’d through a table by ECW’s Sabu at One Night Stand, will take on Gregory Helms in a Champion vs. Champion match. Will the World Champion be up to par for his match with Helms?

The buzz awaiting a WWE return to the SBA is undeniable, and you can bet the SmackDown Superstars won’t disappoint the Garden State when they roll into town for Friday Night SmackDown, 8/7 CT on UPN.
