What will matter most to Kane at WWE Payback?

This Sunday at WWE Payback, four Superstars will compete for the WWE World Heavyweight Title in a Fatal 4-Way Match. While anything can happen in this free-for-all showdown, ironically, the true X-factor could be Kane. WWE’s Director of Operations has been ordered by WWE COO Triple to help Seth Rollins keep his the title or he will be fired as DOO. This begs the question:  just what does Kane care about most?

For weeks now, the Corporate Demon has made no secret about the fact that he doesn't like Rollins, but does like his current position. As a result, he has walked the tight rope between helping The Architect and allowing others to take the black-clad titleholder apart. But this Sunday, will his hate for the “Future of WWE” ultimately drive his actions?

At first glance, the answer seems to be a resounding yes. But, when you look at Kane’s overall record, he does seem to do what is “best for business” when it counts.

Perhaps it’s a question of how much the DOO wants to keep his high place of standing in The Authority. While he did state on SmackDown that he has saved his money wisely and doesn't need his corporate title, does he really want to lose his power?

Or is the World Title most important? Once you hold the WWE World Heavyweight Championship in your grasp, does the desire to possess it again ever really go away? While Kane’s job does hang in the balance, he will still have his power on May 17. Could he theoretically insert himself in the match at the height of the action and win the title before being relieved of his duties?

Of course, all these ideas run under the assumption that Kane is rational. While he has followed the corporate line as of late, one must not forget that he is known as a demon for a reason. Perhaps, when all is said and done and tempers are running high, Kane may not even be in control of his actions at Payback. Under the right circumstances, he has the potential mayhem inside of him to destroy all four competitors, J&J Security and anyone else that gets in his way, just for the heck of it.

What will the WWE Universe see in the main event: the Director of Operations or The Devil’s Favorite Demon? Find out Sunday at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on WWE Payback, available on the award-winning WWE Network.
