An honor to the "Red Tails"

An honor to the "Red Tails"

It was the biggest crowd to ever attend WWE's annual Tribute to the Troops event, as an extraordinary number of U.S. servicemen enjoyed the entertainment at Joint Base Balad, the largest military base in the Middle East. And amid all the high-flying action inside the squared circle, WWE Superstars and today's U.S. servicemen had the opportunity to learn about a special group of World War II heroes.

These brave individuals were airmen officially known as the 332nd Fighter Group of the U.S. Army Air Corps, and later nicknamed the "Red Tails" because of the crimson paint schemes on the tails of their planes. Trained at the historic Tuskegee Institute in Alabama and the Tuskegee Airfield, these airmen were visited in 1941 by first lady Eleanor Roosevelt, who then persuaded her husband, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, to activate the group in World War II.

Credited with 109 planes shot down, 15,000 sorties and 1,500 missions during World War II, the "Red Tails" earned silver stars, flying crosses, purple hearts and bronze stars.

The current embodiment of the 332nd Group is now based at Joint Base Balad in the Middle East, where many of the finest WWE Superstars gathered to put on the most patriotic show of the year for the troops. Near the end of the tour, WWE Chairman Vince McMahon and many other WWE representatives were given a history of the Tuskegee Airmen, and awarded coins in commemoration of WWE's support of the troops.

It was a special honor for both WWE Superstars and members of the U.S. Military to not only greet each other, but also to show admiration toward these unforgettable airmen in U.S. history.
