Who was snubbed at the 2015 Slammy Awards?

Who was snubbed at the 2015 Slammy Awards?

Snubs. Let’s talk about ’em. The 2015 Slammy Awards may have found a way to honor everyone from Ronda Rousey to Damien Mizdow, but a handful of Superstars and Divas still went home unjustly empty-handed. Granted, there isn’t a whole lot to find fault with in this year’s winners. For the most part, the WWE Universe was on point. But these five snubees would be more than justified in calling for a recount.

The New Day (Tag Team of the Year)

The New Day's First Anniversary In-Ring Country Music Jamboree: Raw, November 23, 2015

Kofi Kingston, Big E & Xavier Woods celebrate one year of positivity in WWE with their own take on country music.

Wow. We know The New Day can be aggravating, but did the trio really irritate the WWE Universe to the point that voters overlooked what was probably the biggest 180 in tag team history in favor of crowning The Usos again off a shortened year? In Jimmy & Jey’s absence, The New Day transformed from glad-handing doormats to hobby-horse riding, trombone-blasting, shame-casting Superstars that held the tag team division together and shot it into the stratosphere all at the same time. Shame, indeed.

Kevin Owens (Breakout Star of the Year)

Kevin Owens confronts John Cena: Raw, May 18, 2015

Two nights before NXT TakeOver: Unstoppable, the NXT Champion makes a statement to The Champ.

Hey, don’t expect us to knock Neville in earnest here. Seeing the delight on the face of The Man That Gravity Forgot when he won was the kind of moment that can’t be manufactured. But it’s tough to shirk the guy who walloped John Cena in his first main roster match for breakout value. Kevin Owens’ snub came as a shock, because the WWE Universe seems to have taken to KO’s style, despite his attitude. But when it came time to cough up the gold, they and Neville seem to have had the same reaction: Whatever, Kevin.

Paige (Diva of the Year)

Paige reveals why the Divas Revolution needs a lesson in "respect"

The Diva of Tomorrow explains her attack on Charlotte and Becky on Raw and why the rest of the Divas division should heed her "veteran" advice.

This is tough, because Nikki Bella definitely deserved it. But was the slip-up that almost awarded Paige the prize really so hard to believe? The Diva of Tomorrow didn’t hold any titles in 2015, a stark contrast to her hardware-filled 2014. But she proved to be just as much of a presence as The Fearless One, stealing scenes on “Total Divas,” yapping it up on Conan O’Brien’s couch and holding down a fascinating rivalry with Charlotte and Ric Flair. So, yeah, Nikki should have won this one. But even she seems to agree that a Paige victory would be no upset.

The Dudley Boyz (Surprise Return of the Year)

The Dudley Boyz return to WWE: Raw, Aug. 24, 2015

One of sports-entertainment's most extreme tag teams makes its explosive return to WWE.

The only explanation we can think of for Sting winning this one (which was, all things considered, kind of sick) over The Dudley Boyz was that The Icon’s moment came at the end of the same show, and Sting’s reappearance was just fresher in the WWE Universe’s collective mind. It’s hard to imagine everybody forgetting Bubba Ray & D-Von’s earth-shattering reception upon that first pyro boom, but there you have it. Maybe we need a new Commandment for next year’s Slammys: Thou shalt not snub The Dudley Boyz.

Goldust and Stardust (Double-Cross of the Year)

The New Day vs. Gold & Stardust: Raw, February 9, 2015

The New Day takes on WWE's most tumultuous tandem.

Seeing Damien Sandow — then Mizdow — toss The Miz from the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal was a WrestleMania moment if there ever was one. But a beaten-down sidekick standing up for himself isn’t exactly a betrayal. Stardust trying to snuff out the last days of his brother Goldust’s career was treachery on a more tragic level, especially since all The Bizarre One wanted was to bring back Cody Rhodes from the brink. That The Prince of Dark Matter later stuck the dagger in his father’s back just made the whole thing that much more dramatic.
