Since Backlash, JBL has kept John Cena squarely in his sights. Now, at One Night Stand, he’ll have a chance to fight Cena under the rules of his choosing: A First Blood Match.

Before being fired from his position as Raw’s General Manager, William Regal set a tag team match between JBL & Randy Orton and WWE Champion Triple H & John Cena. When JBL & Orton won the match, they earned the right to challenge their opponents to singles competitions at One Night Stand — a right that JBL quickly exercised.

This match is part of a longer-running rivalry between the two wrestlers, which began at Backlash. There, both men were involved in a Fatal Four Way Elimination Match for the WWE Championship. JBL, believing that he should have had the match against Randy Orton on his own, was furious to have been defeated by John Cena, and taken out of the running for the title. Since then, JBL has put aside his desire for gold, and instead focused on making John Cena’s life a living hell.

Though Cena defeated JBL at Judgment Day, it was only after the self-made millionaire had his way with the Chain Gang Soldier, pounding on him with the type of smashmouth wrestling we’ve come to expect from John “Bradshaw” Layfield. JBL worked John Cena over for most of the match, but was felled by an FU. The Longhorn Loudmouth admitted that he was pinned, but wondered who really won the match, since Cena was recovering in the trainer’s room, and he was out giving interviews.

Now, at One Night Stand, JBL will have the opportunity, and the incentive, to literally draw blood from his opponent. John Cena has stood up to the toughest competitors WWE has to offer, but how will he manage in a match designed for brutality, against the self-proclaimed “wrestling god,” JBL?
