Tonight, WWE makes its return to Rupp Arena in the heart of Lexington, Kentucky. Backlash will mark the first-ever WWE pay-per-view to emanate from Lexington, and the fans of Kentucky have responded by making it the hottest ticket in town. The WWE last visited the Rupp Arena in July 1999 for a live edition of Monday Night RAW.
The Rupp Arena is the home to the most popular sports team in the state, the University of Kentucky Wildcats. Playing at The Rupp, the Kentucky Wildcats have become the most successful basketball team in NCAA history. Because of the popularity of college basketball in Kentucky, the Rupp Arena has also played host to numerous NCAA Tournament games, including the 1985 Final Four. The Lexington Horsemen of the Arena Football League also proudly call Rupp Arena home.
Rupp Arena is the centerpiece of Lexington Center, a large convention and shopping center located in downtown Lexington. The Arena opened in 1976, and has a capacity of close to 24,000 people. The arena, owned by the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government, underwent a $50 million renovation in 2001, making it a state-of-the-art, multi-use facility.
