Shawn Michaels doesn’t sugarcoat the questionable decisions made in his distant past. The man known to many as “The Heartbreak Kid” has found peace by embracing the person he once was, and the man he has become. The roadmap linking the evolution of Michaels’ past and present? The ink on his skin.

Granted, RAW’s Mickie James and ECW’s Layla don’t have the tattoo presence that we’ve seen in past subjects of Superstar Ink. Some people may not even know that Layla or Mickie have tattoos. But two of the Sexiest Women on Television do have some ink of their own, and while it is moderately hidden, WWE.com was lucky enough to get their permission to snap some photographs of them.
Edge: A history in ink
By: Zack Zeigler

While telling stories through the art on one’s body is not a new concept, Edge’s story differs vastly from some of what we’ve seen in Superstar Ink. There have been tattoos dedicated to family with Rey Mysterio and Robbie McAllister, lost friends or family with Balls Mahoney and Shannon Moore, life’s hard lessons with MVP and spiritual connections between the earth and the human soul with Jeff Hardy.

“We don’t care about anybody else’s tattoos,” snipped Rory McAllister, “we only care about our own.” That was one-half of the Highlanders’ response when asked to participate in WWE.com’s Superstar Ink. We gave him a rundown of past participants and opted to show him the format. Obviously, Rory wasn’t interested.

Even an egoist like Montel Vontavious Porter – who will capitalize on any opportunity to rave about himself or what he does – wouldn’t allow WWE.com to photograph every tattoo he’s gotten.
Rey Mysterio: A made man

“I’ll never get my chest tatted up, and I’m not big on tattoos on the legs,” said the ink-laden Rey Mysterio. “I’m running out of space on my body; I’d like to get more but I haven’t figured out where I’ll put them or what I want to get.”

Displays of patriotism show up in a variety of forms: bumper stickers with cheesy slogans, American flag T-shirts or pins to name a few. But that type of patriotic exhibition isn’t what works for Balls Mahoney.

When asked to participate in Superstar Ink, CM Punk joked about the amount of ink he’s acquired over the years. “Man, I have a lot of tattoos, huh?” the ECW Champion told WWE.com. Yes, you do, Punk.

“The dragon on my forearm is protecting his treasure… just like I protect the things I treasure in my life,” Marella explained. “The winged figure on my right arm is like my spirit, always reaching for the top and aiming high.”
Orton's tattoo secrets

One of Orton’s tattoos emerged from circumstance. It evolved from a simple group of letters into something much more elaborate. “I had a tattoo on my left arm that read ‘USMC’ for United States Marine Corps. When I got my bad conduct discharge and got sent home I got rid of the tattoo by getting it covered up.”
Jeff Hardy's roots

“I look at tattoos as a commitment to life,” said Jeff Hardy, who has spent between 50 and 60 hours in a tattoo chair. “The roots that weave up my right arm and onto my neck are my way of connecting with the earth: the earth’s roots carry water like a human’s veins carry blood. I thought it’d be something different besides tribal, you know a lot of guys have tribal [bands].”

“I own a tattoo shop, Gas Chamber Ink. so ink is always on my horizon,” said Shannon Moore. “It’s true what people say, getting tattoos is addicting. You have to be a fan of art and appreciate it; you have to know what you want and you have to know you want it. I know I’ll be happy with my ink until the day I die.”
Mr. Kennedy clowns around

Mr. Kennedy was talking about the clown tattoo that he got on his left arm when he was 19 years old. “It has a lot of meaning because in high school I was voted the class clown and I’m always clowning around. Unfortunately, it ended up looking nothing, not even in the same ballpark, as the tattoo I originally asked for. I immediately went into denial when I saw it; I’m still mad about it to this day.”
