WWE Diva Ashley endured her first few days in China’s harsh wilderness on the premiere of the 15th season of CBS’ Survivor.
Ashley is among 16 Americans competing for the $1 million prize in one of the oldest countries in the world. The contestants began their journey in Shanghai, but were transported to a remote section of China where they participated in a ceremony at a Buddhist temple. The Survivors left their worldly possessions behind, and embarked on a journey with The Art of War, a map and only the clothes on their backs. (Ashley was dressed in a spunky dress and her trademark black combat boots, of course!)
“It is the ultimate challenge – 16 people, all from different walks of life, forced to work together to create a new society while battling the elements and each other. They must learn to adapt or they'll be voted out. In the end, only one will remain to claim the $1 million prize. Thirty-nine days. Sixteen people. One Survivor,” announced host Jeff Probst.
Ashley joined the Zhan Hu (Fighting Tiger) yellow tribe with seven other contestants. Some of her tribemates were shocked to learn the beautiful, young, dynamic Ashley is a WWE Diva.
“I seriously can’t believe you’re a wrestler,” said 26-year-old Nashville, Tenn., musician, Erik.
“It's so fun. It's the greatest job in the world,” Ashley responded.
Behind-the-scenes, Ashley admitted being a SmackDown Diva prepared her for her journey to China.
“I think it's probably prepared me a great deal more for this game... because there is that competitive nature that you have in the locker room, and that's a great positive I have going into this game,” she said. “I don't want to go home a loser because I know my fans are going to want me to win.”
Ashley’s first night in the wilderness was difficult. Heavy rains pounded the Zhan Hu camp, and Ashley awoke incredibly ill.
"My first night was pretty rough. I was soaking wet all night. I think I'm pretty sick. I have chills like really bad. And, like, I keep dry heaving like I want to throw up, but there's just nothing in there,” Ashley said before curling up in a ball on the dirt.
At the Immunity Challenge, the tribes raced through an obstacle course and swamp, carrying a heavy, ceremonial mascot. The Fei Long tribe completed the course and puzzle first, winning Immunity and flint to make fire at camp. Ashley and the Zhan Hu tribe went to the first Tribal Council of the season.
At Tribal Council, a healthier, but uneasy, Ashley admitted that her early illness may have put a target on her back in the game.
"I kind of feel like if you broke it down per day, I was throwing up, I was lying on the ground. I pretty much was feeling like I was going to die,” she explained to Probst. “I guess if you put that into the equation, then, I would have technically been the one who has done the least amount of work. I don’t feel like I should be judged on that.”
The Diva survived the first elimination round, as “Chicken,” the 47-year-old chicken farmer from Marion, Va., was voted out 5 to 2 to 1 over Ashley and Peih-Gee, respectively. While Ashley did less work at camp because of her illness, Chicken never fit in with the tribe because he refused to express his opinion.
Chicken said he’s proud to be a small part of such a big adventure, but warned that the Zhan Hu tribe is playing by the seat of its pants. Will they grow stronger, and will Ashley’s health improve? Scenes from next week’s episode show the Diva’s WWE moves in action as she’s seen tackling a female contestant to the ground; however, Ashley’s also seen arguing with Zhan Hu’s leader, Dave.
