A Brush with greatness

Throughout sports-entertainment’s history, many of its warriors have done anything they could to grasp the attention of our fans, from brandishing slop buckets and tobacco cans to unleashing live snakes. Yet nothing stands out more than the few Superstars who have gone Pablo Picasso on their faces, donning the paint to say something about their persona. Therefore, in honor of the colorful Mardi Gras season, where the party people in New Orleans' French Quarter make face paint second nature, WWE.com takes a look at the Superstars whose personalities came to life in living color on their faces. Vote for your favorite face paint now!

The Road Warriors

The Road Warriors

Animal & Hawk revolutionized sports-entertainment with their power, their teamwork and their unforgettable face paint. With the Doomsday Device to squash their opponents, and intimidation on their side, the duo captured World Tag Team gold on two occasions. Oh, what a rush!

The Ultimate Warrior

The Ultimate Warrior

Already chosen as one of WWE’s Most Flamboyant Superstars, this hyperactive combatant’s colorful cosmetics sparked a whole generation of face-painting little Warriors. Despite his bizarre behavior, his war paint was still pretty cool, even if he did have it applied in a different universe.

Kamala

Kamala

Kamala wrestled barefoot, wore a loin cloth and colored not just his face, but his pectorals with moons and stars. Though most of his time was spent patting his belly, the Ugandan Giant was a force to be reckoned with, as illustrated in his rivalries with Undertaker and Hulk Hogan.

Papa Shango

Papa Shango

Never has a Superstar’s facial features struck more fear into other Superstars or our fans than Papa Shango’s. The skull-painted voodoo style of Shango’s ear-to-ear evil enamel was second only to his supernatural in-ring abilities, where he cursed his opponents en route to victory.

Umaga

Umaga

Any Superstar who has stared across the ring at Umaga can attest that his traditional Samoan face paint are the markings of a true savage. With many competitors in awe of his uncontrolled rage and primitive face paint, the Samoan Bulldozer continues to destroy anything in his path.

The Great Muta

The Great Muta

Most of his career was spent in Japan, but this Superstar captivated U.S. audiences with his acrobatic, risk-taking style. With his elaborate facial coverings and the greenish mist he used to make murals on opponents' faces, Muta was one of the most dangerous Superstars in history.

Boogeyman

Boogeyman

The worm-wielding Boogeyman’s coated face is as mysterious as he is, but it also keeps others at bay. With his red and black color speckled specter or deep dark red paint on his face, Boogeyman is a formidable foe who doesn’t just devour creatures of the night – he is one himself.

Demolition

Demolition

The longest-reigning World Tag Team Champions in WWE history also can claim to have two of the most recognizable multi-colored mugs. Along with later addition, Crush, Ax & Smash helped define the tag team ranks in the ‘80s. Their jagged-lined silver and red will always be remembered.

Doink

Doink

Perhaps the award for most all-encompassing face coloration goes to Doink the Clown. His vividly painted grin accented by his lime green locks allured and delighted our fans. Pulling pranks and picking up victories on his way to stealing our hearts, Doink still dons the paint occasionally.

Crush

Crush

Picking up his propensity for face paint from his Demolition brethren, Crush continued to coat his face in cosmetics when he Kona Clutched his competition in the ‘90s. Soon after, he abandoned his more amiable Hawaiian roots for a career of villainy, keeping the paint, albeit darker.

Luna Vachon

Luna Vachon

Whether she was fighting, managing or just wreaking havoc, Luna Vachon turned many heads. This disturbing “Diva” bore a raspy voice and vein-like vines painted down her shaven skull. With her eerie eye-liner, Luna helped Superstars such as Bam Bam Bigelow and Goldust.

The Missing Link

The Missing Link

His face green and blue-hued, the always unpredictable Missing Link captivated our fans in the '80s with his head-banging antics. And if his persona wasn’t colorful enough, the Missing Link was led to the ring by quick-tongued WWE Hall of Famer, Bobby “The Brain” Heenan.
