WWE looking to 'the next level' in UK and Italy

As reported in a news item on PRWeek.com May 7, WWE is looking around for a possible new public relations agency to help them “take the brand to the next level” in the UK and Italy. WWE has used The Outside Organization for the last two years and is allowing them to re-apply for the job. Claire Murphy, WWE’s Director of Communications Sponsorship and Promotions, says that WWE will begin their new partnership with whichever company they choose July 1.

Ultimate Warrior training for return

As of May 7, LordsofPain.net is reporting that former WWE Champion Ultimate Warrior is preparing to start training for his upcoming in-ring return in June. He will begin training this week in California with another former WWE Champion, Rob Van Dam. It is also reported that he has been in contact with former World Heavyweight Champion and current TNA wrestler Booker T about utilizing his wrestling school in Houston to help prepare for his return.
Larry Zbyszko book released

As reported on PWInsider.com May 7, Larry Zbyszko’s autobiography titled "Adventures in Larryland! Life in Professional Wrestling" is now available from ECW Press. The book discusses the 30-year career of Zbyszko starting in 1974, and includes legendary matches with Bruno Sammartino and Japan’s Masa Saito. He also talks about being the color-commentator for WCW in the late ‘90s.
"Superstar" Billy Graham hospitalized

According to WrestlingFigs.com May 6, WWE Legend “Superstar” Billy Graham was hospitalized on Monday evening after falling in his hotel room. He tried to catch himself by grabbing onto the sink in the bathroom but the sink came off the wall. He was released from the hospital after X-rays were taken.
Kurt Angle to host SpikeTV reality show

TNA wrestler Kurt Angle is set to host a SpikeTV reality show, according to a report on Rajah.com May 7. The show is entitled “Caught in the Action” and will involve the use of hidden-cameras. Angle was reportedly filming for the show over WrestleMania XXIV weekend in Orlando.
Former WWE Superstars bat for cancer

On May 3, a celebrity softball game took place at Space Coast Stadium in Viera, Fla., benefiting The World Skin Cancer Foundation, as reported by Florida Today May 2. Four former WWE Superstars, Scotty 2 Hotty, Haku, current TNA wrestler Brother D-Von and Maven, all were scheduled to attend the event. The game has benefited local organizations, such as Junior Achievement, in the past.
WWE & THQ teaming up on 'Legendary' game

THQ and WWE will join forces on a new video game project aside from the pairing’s WWE SmackDown vs. Raw franchise, as reported in a press release on Yahoo Finance May 6. The two will be releasing WWE Legends of WrestleMania and have scheduled a release date for March 2009, to coincide with the WrestleMania 25 event in Houston.

WWE reported its first quarter financial results for the current year, with the quarter ending March 31, 2008, on May 6. WWE announced an increase in revenue to $162.6 million in comparison to last year’s $107.4 million. WWE’s integration into the presidential race was discussed amongst other media outlets as a segment on The Today Show on May 6. Host Matt Lauer discussed with his guests the appearances by the presidential candidates on Saturday Night Live, The Late Show and MySpace.com, as well as WWE’s Raw. The segment discussed whether the candidates were over-saturating the market, and if it was worth it or not in the long run. The segment called “Pop-culture Politics” can be seen at TodayShow.com.
Sid Vicious no-shows event

Sid Vicious no-showed a Prime Time Wrestling event in Belleville, Mich., this past weekend, as reported in a news item on Rajah.com May 5. Vicious apparently told the promoter of Prime Time Wrestling, Dave Martin, that he would be there despite an injury, but when Martin went to pick up Sid at the airport, he found out Sid never boarded the plane. Afterward, he attempted calling Sid’s home but nobody answered.

Ring of Honor will be heading down south for a show in Manassas, Va., this coming Friday, as reported on ROHWrestling.com May 4. Attendance that night will establish whether or not the company will return to the area in the future.

WWE's "SmackDown vs. Raw 2009" improving

Next year’s version of the game will feature decreased load time, smarter computer opponents, additions to the commentary track, additions to the animation scheme and improved hit detection. McMahon is being honored for his accomplishment of transforming the WWE brand from a regional wrestling program to a corporation that spans across all accessible media platforms including, but not limited to, print, Internet, film, television and live events.

Mickie James helps save life

In an article posted on NBC11.com May 1, a person sent in an e-mail describing a heroic event that took place in Orlando during WrestleMania XXIV weekend. A man on line during a signing featuring Mickie James and Torrie Wilson collapsed and started having an epileptic seizure. A 911 operator was close by and made their way to the man to help him. The person who e-mailed the news station described Mickie James as being helpful during the situation and sincerely concerned over the well-being of the fan.

According to an article on WickedLocal.com May 2, John Cena’s brother, Officer Dan Cena of the Newbury Police Department in Massachusetts, has raised money for drunk driving prevention after he was involved in a head on collision with a drunk driver in February of 2007. Cena organized a charity event with his father and brother and gave the money to Mother’s Against Drunk Drivers, the Trista Zinck Memorial Scholarship and donated top of the line breathalyzers to local police departments.

Former WWE Tag Team Champion and WCW World Champion Ron Simmons was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame yesterday, as reported on The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Web site May 2. Simmons was one of the most dominant defensive linemen to play for Florida State and was a two-time All-American. He was one of 13 players to receive the prestigious honor this year. Others included former UCLA Quarterback Troy Aikman.

WWE Superstar Santino Marella was arrested and charged with a DUI after being pulled over a little before 3 a.m. Thursday, May 1, in Tampa, Fla., as reported on ProWrestling.net. Marella’s blood alcohol level was around 0.06, below the legal limit of 0.08. He was held on $500 bond.

Human Tornado injured

He injured himself before his match on April 25 at a Juggalo Championship Wrestling event.

Wrestling’s Web site April 30, Yvon Robert Jr., son of Quebec wrestling legend Yvon Robert, Sr., and former administrator for Grand Prix Wrestling in the 1970’s, passed away at the age of 65. Robert was most well known for his work with Grand Prix Wrestling competing with the Rougeau promotion in the Quebec area. He was well liked within the wrestling industry and is survived by his wife.

Former WWE & WCW wrestler Psichosis was recently caught trying to cross the United States-Mexican border with invalid paperwork, as reported in a news item on LordsofPain.net April 28. Psichosis attempted to gain access to the United States to work an independent wrestling event using tourist papers. The tourist papers were taken from him and he was deported back to Mexico.

As reported on WrestlingFigs.com April 26, Elevera Anoa’i Fatu, sister of "The Wild Samoans" Afa and Sika, passed away Friday morning. Elevera was the mother of Umaga, Rikishi and the Tonga Kid. Services will be this Saturday, and her burial will take place May 4. She leaves behind six children, 30 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

According to an article on LordsofPain.net April 22, Gameloft, a mobile phone video game developer, has signed a licensing deal with Hulk Hogan to distribute a "Hulkamania" wrestling game for cell phones. The game will allow users to play as eight different wrestlers, including Hogan, and will allow gamers to perform several different wrestling moves to beat their opponent. The game is due for release in August 2008.

Susan “Tex” Green, a former women’s wrestler from the 70’s and 80’s, has been in the hospital since Feb. 5, as reported in an article on the Slam! Wrestling Web site. Green was diagnosed with a staph infection in her back and has been in a Columbus, S.C.. The biggest scare came around April 10 when she was put on a ventilator for four days.

WWE legend “Rowdy” Roddy Piper is helping promote a soccer program for inner-city kids, ages 6 to 14, as reported on SLAM! Wrestling’s Web site April 11. SPIN, Sports Programs for Inner-City Neighborhoods, is working with local officials, as one of Winnipeg, Canada’s LiveSafe initiatives, to offer a free league for children who come from families that otherwise could not afford it. Piper is promoting SPIN as a program similar to what helped him avoid going down the wrong path when he was a child.

Originally, the entire 68-acre site was to be declared surplus, but a revised version of the bill will now focus solely on the building’s 13-acre parking lot. Austin Aries to miss ROH's weekend events

Ring of Honor’s Gabe Sapolsky announced that Austin Aries will not be performing at this weekend’s live events, as reported by ProWrestling.net April 8. Aries will miss the shows in Boston and Edison, N.J., due to a head injury. The company has to rebook the lineup for both events, and hopes Aries will be able to return to action the weekend after when ROH travels to Detroit and Chicago.

After accidentally removing WWE Superstars’ signatures from a 9-year-old boy’s XBox game console that he sent in for repairs, Microsoft officials contacted WWE in an attempt to work something out, reports the Nottingham Evening Post on April 7. The outcome is more than the boy could have ever hoped for. He and his mother will now receive another chance to meet with the Superstars and to get the console resigned at a WWE live event at the Nottingham Arena on April 13.
TNA in talks with former UFC fighter

Martin was pulled over around 10:30 a.m. April 6, and after failing field sobriety tests, was brought to the Land O’ Lakes Jail where he posted $500 bail later that evening. Former WWE developmental wrestler Mack Johnson, Jr. has admitted himself to rehab thanks to help from WWE, as reported in a news item on Lords of Pain April 4. Johnson, who was released in 2006, posted an entry in his MySpace blog revealing that he was seeking help for drug addiction. Additionally, he thanks Vince McMahon, the McMahon family, Jim Ross and WWE for the assistance in doing so.

Legendary wrestler passes away

Legendary women’s wrestler Sara Lee passed away on Saturday, as reported in an article on TNAWrestling.com April 5. Lee performed in the Nashville area in the ‘50s and ‘60s, and was featured in the documentary Lipstick and Dynamite, which chronicled the early period of women’s wrestling. Shortly after TNA’s start in 2002, Lee worked with the company promoting ticket sales in the Tennessee area and was honored as part of a legends ceremony at TNA’s first pay-per-view.

UK ticket sale issues for TNA

In an attempt to rectify the problem, TNA is offering a few options to those who are affected by the inconvenience. The company is offering either a full refund, a VIP package with a special one-hour pre-show meet and greet at a discounted price or for the seats originally reserved to be transferred to the event on June 12.

The preview confirmed 17 of 25 playable characters, including Samoa Joe, Sting, Booker T, Kurt Angle and Christian Cage. Also confirmed were at least eight different match types and several different arenas including the Impact Zone, venues in Japan and a national armory.

Former WCW wrestler "Hardbody” Harrison Norris has been sentenced to life in prison and to pay a $2,400 special assessment for several charges in relation to sex trafficking and forced labor, as reported by PWInsider.com on April 1. Norris was convicted Nov. 22, 2007, on 24 counts in relation to the crimes. Two of his co-conspirators, Aimee Allen and Cedric Jackson, were also found guilty and were both sentenced earlier in the year.
