In Marvel's "The Avengers," Earth's Mightiest Heroes set aside their differences and come together to battle a common enemy. Throughout WWE history there have been a number of similar circumstances where WWE, WCW, ECW and NWA Superstars joined forces to overcome seemingly insurmountable odds. Dusty Rhodes, Nikita Koloff and The Road Warriors

To even the odds with the most nefarious and talented group of all-time, The Four Horsemen, Dusty Rhodes, Nikita Koloff and The Road Warriors joined forces during the summer of 1987. Rhodes and Koloff were already called “The Superpowers,” but their allegiance with the dominant Road Warriors made them nearly unstoppable. The 1987 Great American Bash was stretched out over a series of three separate events, two of which featured The Superpowers and The Road Warriors battling The Horsemen in WarGames Matches. Coming together to battle a common foe, Rhodes, Koloff, Hawk and Animal proved their dominance and defeated the Horsemen in both matches. Rhodes would continue his alliance with The Road Warriors and the trio would capture the NWA Six-Man Tag Team Titles on two occasions. ( WATCH)

The Mega Powers

The two-man super-team of Hulk Hogan and “Macho Man” Randy Savage came together at WrestleMania IV. In the finals of the WWE Championship Tournament at The Show of Shows, Savage squared off with The Million Dollar Man. However, Savage could not secure the victory because of constant interference from Andre the Giant. This prompted “Macho Man” to send for help in the form of Hulk Hogan, who helped Savage overcome the odds and capture the WWE Championship. In the months that followed, Hogan and Savage remained united to prevent The Million Dollar Man and Andre the Giant from buying their way to the top of WWE, defeating the money-minded duo at SummerSlam. Unfortunately, tensions flared between The Mega Powers over Miss Elizabeth and the duo exploded at WrestleMania V. This, however, would not be the end of the Mega Powers as they later united to battle the Dungeon of Doom in WCW. ( WATCH)

The Hulkamaniacs

In 1995, Hulk Hogan and “Macho Man” Randy Savage were embroiled in a bitter rivalry with the evil Dungeon of Doom. At Fall Brawl 1995, the pair once recognized as WWE’s Mega Powers needed powerful allies to take on Kamala, The Zodiac, The Shark and Meng in a WarGames Match. Hogan and Savage teamed with two of WCW’s most stalwart competitors – Lex Luger and Sting. Dubbed “The Hulkamaniacs,” the four-man dream team entered the bout dressed in camouflage fatigues and ready for battle. The assembled strength of The Hulkamaniacs was too much for The Dungeon of Doom to handle and they picked up the victory. The win allowed Hulk Hogan to have five minutes alone inside the WarGames steel cage with his nemesis and Dungeon of Doom leader, The Taskmaster. ( WATCH)

Sting, Lex Luger and “Macho Man” Randy Savage

In 1996, Scott Hall and Kevin Nash arrived in WCW with the sole intent of wreaking havoc and starting a war. They alluded to working with a third man, and challenged any three of WCW’s stars at Bash at the Beach. WCW President Eric Bischoff held a draft and ended up assembling a team of three competitors who epitomized what the organization stood for— Sting, Lex Luger and “Macho Man” Randy Savage. At Bash at the Beach, Luger and Savage wore face paint similar to Sting to show their unity as a team and their strong allegiance toward WCW in the face of an unpredictable enemy. When Hall and Nash’s alleged “third man” did not appear, it seemed possible that WCW’s super-team would be successful. The Outsiders were forced to resort to underhanded tactics – drawing the attention of Hulk Hogan—who appeared to be another member of WCW’s super-team. But Hogan betrayed WCW, and WCW’s team was caught completely off-guard as The New World Order was born. ( WATCH)

Team Austin

Following his victory over rising star “Stone Cold” Steve Austin in a brutal Submission Match at WrestleMania 13, Bret Hart formed the formidable Hart Foundation group, including family members Owen Hart, Jim Neidhart and The British Bulldog and Austin’s former ally Brian Pillman. The villainous faction was determined to undermine American culture in favor of their native Canada. In his hometown of Calgary, Alberta, “Hit Man” dared five of America’s top grapplers to take on The Hart Foundation at Canadian Stampede. The Texas Rattlesnake stepped forward, and knowing his rivals would be lauded in their native land, banded together with four of WWE’s best – MMA veteran Ken Shamrock, former Intercontinental Champion Goldust and tag team legends The Legion of Doom. Tensions flared in the weeks leading up the event, which is widely considered one of the finest in WWE history. Although Team Austin came up short, the match and post-bout chaos was highly unique due to the Canadian crowd cheering for the mostly despised Hart Foundation. “Stone Cold” and his crew might not have been victorious in the matchup, but facing off with the Canadian natives on their turf was truly a victory of courage. The Union

It’s the classic story of boy fires man, man becomes disgruntled, man forms team of elite Superstars, elite Superstars destroy boy. For months in 1998 and into 1999, Mr. McMahon’s Corporation and The Undertaker’s Ministry of Darkness were dominant forces of evil in WWE. Although they were at odds, when The Chairman took a leave of absence, his son Shane joined together with The Deadman to form The Corporate Ministry. Mankind wrangled up three other Superstars who were also ex-members of The Corporation – Ken Shamrock, Big Show and Test – to combat the massive villainous entity and announced their unlikely alliance on Raw by declaring themselves The Union.The fab four approached the Corporate Ministry-filled ring all holding wooden 2x4s, and began a valiant attack. The group battled the devious combination of The Big Boss Man, The Acolytes and Viscera in an Elimination Match on pay-per-view with The Union emerging victorious. The Corporate Ministry disbanded the following month.

Team WWE (2001)

Following the acquisition of WCW and ECW in 2001, competitors from both brands banded together as The Alliance under the leadership of Shane and Stephanie McMahon to take over WWE. During WWE’s first battle with The Alliance at InVasion, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin betrayed WWE and joined the hostile force. After months of struggle, Survivor Series 2001 would decide the fates of WWE and The Alliance in a traditional Survivor Series Elimination Match. To ensure the future of his organization, Mr. McMahon assembled a dream team comprised of five of the greatest Superstars of all-time. The Rock, Kane, The Undertaker, Big Show and Chris Jericho put their differences aside to join forces in an effort to save the WWE Universe. The defenders of WWE proved their might and claimed victory over the likes of Rob Van Dam, Kurt Angle, Booker T, Shane McMahon and “Stone Cold,” effectively ending The Alliance and solidifying WWE’s dominance in sports-entertainment. The Rock ‘n’ Sock Connection

In June of 2003, Mick Foley was honored for his contributions to the world of sports-entertainment, even presented with a ceremonial Hardcore Championship. But The Hardcore Legend’s return was not all smiles as he was assaulted by the dominant Evolution. Over the following year, Mrs. Foley’s Baby Boy would become entangled in a bitter rivalry with Randy Orton, who claimed he would destroy the legend of Mick Foley. But if Mick was to battle Orton and his Evolution cohorts in the ring, he knew he needed backup, which came in the form of his longtime rival and tag team partner The Rock. The unlikely pair reunited their hugely popular Rock ‘n’ Sock Connection tag team to combat Orton, Batista and Ric Flair in a Handicap Match at WrestleMania XX. Although the outnumbered duo came up short inside Foley’s home arena of Madison Square Garden, he and The Rock electrified the New York City crowd like few Superstars can. ( WATCH)

The ECW Originals

Due to tremendous outcry from fans, ECW was revived by WWE in 2006, and several of the warriors who had come to define ECW during the initial run of the company were recruited for the brand’s relaunch on Syfy. The leader of these personalities was Rob Van Dam, who had become a WWE mainstay in recent years, but was always arguably the original ECW’s most popular competitor. After winning the WWE Championship at One Night Stand, Mr. Pay-Per-View was also presented with the ECW Championship, but lost the title the following month as ECW became swarmed with new faces. Debuting Superstars Elijah Burke, Marcus Cor Von, Kevin Thorn and Matt Striker formed The New Breed, determined to dominate ECW, and forever alter the cherished promotion. RVD banded together with old guard Sabu, Tommy Dreamer and The Sandman to form the ECW Originals and protect the three extreme letters they cared about so deeply. At WrestleMania 23, The ECW Originals defeated The New Breed in a thrilling 8-Man Tag Team Match proving that sometimes you just can’t top the original. ( WATCH)

Team WWE (2010)

Following the first season of WWE NXT, Wade Barrett immediately formed The Nexus with his fellow Rookies, and took WWE by storm with a brazen attack on John Cena. Daniel Bryan, one of the group’s members, felt remorse for the assault and was unceremoniously dismissed. For more than two months, The Nexus made their presence felt throughout WWE, complaining about the treatment they received on NXT and focusing their attacks on Cena. After refusing offers to join the group, Cena formed a super team of WWE’s best who had all been victims of The Nexus – Edge, Chris Jericho, John Morrison, R-Truth, The Great Khali and WWE Hall of Famer Bret Hart. Team WWE was set to face off with The Nexus in a massive Elimination Match at SummerSlam, but the former Rookies eliminated Khali from the equation. Seemingly down a Superstar, John Cena revealed that the final member of Team WWE was none other than the returning Bryan. The contest came down to the two leaders, John Cena and Wade Barrett, who submitted to Cena’s STF – a critical win that halted The Nexus’ momentum in WWE. ( WATCH)
