An unfortunate kidney injury sidelined Intercontinental Champion Ahmed Johnson towards the latter part of the summer of 1996. As a result, Johnson was forced to vacate the championship. WWE newcomer "Wildman" Marc Mero won a tournament to name the new Intercontinental Champion, last defeating Faarooq.
