10 Superstars who creep us out
June 7, 2013
Bray Wyatt is coming.
In recent weeks, the WWE Universe has been given frightening glimpses at the mysterious, eerie Wyatt and his bizarre followers. A notoriously brutal competitor from WWE NXT, the 6-foot-3, nearly 300-lb. brawler has promised to become WWE’s “new face of fear.”
Exactly what Wyatt has planned remains unknown, but there is no doubt that the nightmarish videos shown on both Raw and SmackDown mark the emergence of a sinister and spine-chilling new force in the WWE landscape. In anticipation of the arrival of Wyatt and his unhinged sycophants, WWE.com looks at 10 of the most bizarre, most unsettling Superstars in WWE history. Read on to see who gives us the creeps, if you dare …
Any list of creepy competitors has to begin with The Deadman, who has been a singular force on the WWE roster since his debut at Survivor Series 1991. Aside from his iconic – and to this day still petrifying – ring entrance, this supernatural Superstar utterly terrifies and dominates his opponents in the squared circle, as the victims of his apparently indestructible 21-0 WrestleMania Streak can attest.
From his association with the eerie Paul Bearer to his time leading The Ministry of Darkness, The Undertaker’s unparalleled WWE career has been as chilling as it has been distinguished.
To say that Snitsky had a screw loose would be quite an understatement. This immense Superstar had a mean streak as large as his massive body. Sadistic and disturbing, Snitksy took great pleasure in inflicting pain on his fellow grapplers and showed loyalty to no one.
Perhaps the pinnacle of Snitksy’s derangement came when he punted a “baby” into the audience on the November 8, 2004, episode of Raw. Although the “baby” in question was revealed to be a doll, this shocking act was a perfect example of why the menacing giant had such a hard time finding opponents – or friends. But don’t judge Snitsky: “It’s not his fault.”
Perhaps the creepiest Superstars of the entire Attitude Era, the vampiric Brood struck fear in the beating hearts of their foes. Following their eerie, sanguine fluid-spewing leader Gangrel, Edge and Christian burned through WWE like the flames of their fiery entrance.
Dishing out “bloodbaths” and raining down fear, The Brood made their stain on WWE as truly frightening opponents. But at the end of the day, these gory, gothic grapplers just wanted to have a bloody good time.
One of the most peculiar and striking personalities to ever venture into a WWE ring, Papa Shango was a practitioner of voodoo magic. Donning a top hat, skull face paint and a huge bone necklace, the witch doctor called upon supernatural forces to lead him to victory in the squared circle.
Using his foul enchantments to appear in a plume of smoke or to set his terrified opponents on fire, the big, bad voodoo man’s WWE tenure was relatively short-lived, which was a stroke of luck for his fellow Superstars.
Sneering, screaming and thrashing about, Luna Vachon was truly one-of-a-kind. With wild patterns shaved into her blond hair and bizarre face paint, the second-generation competitor served as a daunting manager and partner for Bam Bam Bigelow, Goldust, Shawn Michaels and other unique personalities.
An intimidating alternative to what many WWE fans consider the “typical” WWE Diva, she also made a mark as a member of The Oddities. Perhaps the creepiest and most striking female to ever set foot in a WWE ring, Luna Vachon was as unusual as she was unforgettable.
Since his apocalyptic debut at Badd Blood: In Your House in 1997, The Devil’s Favorite Demon has rained hellfire and brimstone down upon WWE. A twisted and tormented soul, Kane has done and won nearly everything there is to in sports-entertainment, destroying countless foes along his path to becoming a Triple Crown Champion.
Whether he’s administering big boots or chokeslams, destroying his adversaries at the side of his brother, The Undertaker, or hugging it out with the “Yes!” man, Daniel Bryan, Kane has left an indelible mark, not only as The Big Red Monster and one of the most nightmarish Superstars in WWE history, but also as one of the greatest in-ring competitors of all time.
Apparently made from concentrated childhood nightmares, The Boogeyman brought terror – and earthworms – to all who crossed his path in WWE. With his trademark clock around his neck, the crazed combatant let his opponents know that their time was up.
After defeating an unlucky adversary, the disgusting Boogeyman would spit earthworms on them as they lay prone, grossing out millions along the way. Many Superstars have been scary over the years, but how many have compelled WWE fans to check under beds and in closets?
The Bizarre One earned an impressive 11 championships in WWE, including the Intercontinental, Hardcore and World Tag Team Titles. The Superstar known as Goldust, however, seemed to take more enjoyment in baffling and upsetting his opponents in the ring and out.
Donning strange attire and make-up and pairing with the notorious Luna Vachon and Marlena, respectively, the unpredictable second-generation enigma never met a Superstar with whom he didn’t enjoy playing his twisted mind games. Just like mid-1990s rockers OMC famously sang, “How bizarre.”
Doink the Clown
With all due respect to Stephen Sondheim, send out the clown. Tricky, cruel and unhinged, Doink the Clown baffled Superstars and the WWE Universe alike when he rolled into WWE. With his disturbing appearance and often inexplicable behavior, this clownish combatant added a memorably deranged presence to WWE in the mid-1990s.
Doink’s disturbing antics were so effective in unsettling WWE fans – and engendering deep-seeded coulrophobia – that few miss WWE’s circus freak.
Jake “The Snake” Roberts
No list of creepy Superstars would be complete without the legendary Jake “The Snake” Roberts. Waging psychological warfare and intimidating his opponents while rarely raising his gravelly voice, Roberts remains one of the greatest, most threatening talkers in WWE history, in addition to being a technical wizard and the innovator of the iconic DDT maneuver.
More than anything, however, Roberts is known for slithering to the ring with a massive python housed in a burlap sack. Using his serpentine sidekicks in rivalries against everyone from Andre the Giant to “Macho Man” Randy Savage, Roberts made sure that no WWE fan would ever trust – or forget – “The Snake.”
When they make their much-anticipated debut, will Bray Wyatt and his followers join the ranks of WWE’s creepiest and most terrifying Superstars? Until then, the WWE Universe can only await the terrifying arrival of Bray Wyatt and his “family.”
