WWE Cruiserweight Champion Neville def. Austin Aries (Submission Match)

BALTIMORE — Long live The King of the Cruiserweights.

Austin Aries has come closer to dethroning WWE Cruiserweight Champion Neville than any competitor to date, but in a Submission Match at WWE Extreme Rules, A-Double was forced to once again bow to the cruel monarch.

In a clash of mat technicians that could only be won by making the other Cruiserweight tap out, Aries looked to end Neville’s historic reign by way of the Last Chancery, a move that defeated the WWE Cruiserweight Champion just six nights prior on Raw and nearly cost him the title at both WrestleMania and WWE Payback. Unfortunately, Neville slowed the challenger down by targeting his injured knee, limiting A-Double’s varied arsenal.

Still, despite the excruciating pain, there was no quit in Aries, who finally managed to make Neville tap out to the Last Chancery — unfortunately, though, The King of the Cruiserweights was pounding the floor outside the ring and not the mat inside the ring. Therefore, the match continued.

When Aries’ daring dive to the outside of the ring failed to find its mark, The King of the Cruiserweights seized a golden opportunity. With a combination of desperation and cunning, Neville soared off the top rope onto a battle-weary Aries with a rarely-seen Red Arrow before quickly locking in the Rings of Saturn — the same move that incapacitated Aries days earlier on WWE 205 Live — to score the tap-out victory and retain the title.

Now that Aries has once again been turned back by The King of the Cruiserweights, what’s next for A-Double? As for Neville, only one question remains: Can anyone take the title from him?
